Can it be used outdoors in covered patio?

This is rated for indoor use only. I would look for one that is rated for outdoor use only. It would last a lot longer in my opinion. Excellent fan and light though.

I am replacing a fan currently connected to wall switch. Why do the instructions with this fan say not to connect to a wall switch?

You can connect it to a wall switch if you want and it won’t hurt the fan at all. Just leave the wall switch powered on and use the remote to control the fan. Or you can cap the wires from the switch and use the remote only.

Do you need to use the light kit with this fan or does it come with a blackout/blank plate?

The remote for the fan let’s you run them both at the same time or just run the fan with out the light or have the light without the fan running hope this answers your question
