Deliver to Tunisia

2009 release, the fifth album from the Alt-Rockers led by Tjinder Singh and Ben Ayers. Perhaps best known for their 1997 single 'Brimful of Asha' - which was propelled to the UK #1 slot by remixer Fatboy Slim - this studio album comes some seven years after 2002's Handcream for a Generation. With a renewed energy, Singh and Ayers deliver an album of boundary crossing Indie Pop, taking in everything from Psychedelic Rock through to Punjabi Folk while managing to maintain their ability to write the perfect feel-good Pop song. Ample Play.

Classic Cornershop
Shortly before this record was released, I read an interview somewhere with Tjinder Singh in which he described "Judy Sucks a Lemon" with words to the effect this would go down as the greatest record in rock n roll history. One might say Mr. Singh is prone to a little hyperbole, or maybe he doesn't take himself too seriously? While it's not the greatest record in rock n roll history, it's classic Cornershop, with plenty of songs that will stick in your brain. The record begins with "Who fingered rock n roll?" Every once in a while, you see people wearing T-shirts with the words "MORE COWBELL!". Well, Cornershop took the message to heart, and threw plenty of cowbell, that symbol of 70s rock n roll kitsch into the mix from the beginning. It's a little hard to tell whether they're serious, but it sounds good, which is what counts. From there, the record has several other catchy Stones driven songs (that is, if the Stones had used sitar in more of their songs). As with previous Cornershop records, not every track on "Judy sucks a lemon" holds up, but at least half of the songs are great. The final track on the album, "Turn on the Truth/The truth is turned on", which clocks in at more than 16 minutes, is worth the price of the CD all by itself. No word on when, and on what label the CD will be released in the US. It's kind of a shame that they've left Luakabop, as the label and the band seemed to be a good fit, but these things happen.

If you like a sitar type of sound; this is for you.

Cornershop is Back!
This album is great. It opens asking "Who Fingered Rock and Roll?", (a great question), and ends with a tad long gospel tune. Overall, I think Cornershop is returning to the care-free days of "Brim full of Ashra" with pop notes and leaving the techno boredom they had been shopping with over the last few years. If you still like sitar in your pop music then buy it!

a quirky-fresh & playful musical ethno-pop mélange.
If you listen to the 5th album from this London band, here’s what you’ll get: 1.Sitar-driven, soulful roots rock with synthesizer & cowbell 2.Eclectic psychedelic indie pop with rock guitar chords & acapella vocal harmonies over afro-percussion and punctuating horns 3.Short, percussive dub/lounge pop tunes 4.Interspersed snippets of conversation and backward-tracked soundscapes 5.Ethnic flavored raga-drone psychedelic synth indie dance 6.Layered horns & synthesizers over tongue-in-cheek political rap-alongs for jazzy fashion hippies 7.Smooth reggae pop with electronic interruptions and manipulated vocal samples 8. A 17-minute wandering psychedelic soul-jam closer 9.And a cover of Manfred Mann’s (written by Bob Dylan) classic 1968 hit “The Mighty Quinn”. “Judy Sucks a Lemon for Breakfast” is a quirky-fresh & playful musical ethno-pop mélange.

More nice, funky indiepop from a funky indiepop band
Cornershop"Judy Sucks A Lemon for Breakfast"(Rough Trade/Ample Play, 2010)-----------------------------------------------One could say, with reasonable fairness, that Cornershop are still recycling their old sound and offer little that they haven't already shown us. But that's not a bad thing, since they have always been such as great band; the same could be said of other indiepop bands such as Teenage Fan Club, et. al. Sometimes it's fine to stick with a good thing: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Sure, a lot of "Lemon For Breakfast" sounds a lot like other records, including their breakthrough album, "When I Was Born For The 7th Time," but that doesn't mean this new record is deficient in any way... Indeed, one of the most fun tracks is the super-long, funky jam track, "The Turned On Truth (The Truth Is Turned On)", which takes the laid-back riff from "Brimful Of Asha" and playfully twists it into all sorts of languid, trippy curlicues -- I'm sure this track reflects many long live performances, and shows how fun it would be to spend a night with Tjinder Singh and his pals. The rest of the record also reflects their playful, puckish approach, with hook-laden songs such as "Who Fingered Rock'n'Roll?" and "Free Love" that'll perk your ears up. Cornershop may not necessarily be innovating much, but they sure sound groovy. (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Music Guide)

Grateful. But not great.
I'm a huge Cornershop and I'm so grateful the new album has finally dropped. But truth be told, "Handcream For A Generation" was, to me, the masterpiece; "Judy Sucks A Lemon For Breakfast" is more like the sequel. At least I was able to have a friend mule it over to me from England and actually save money on what they're charging for it here. Also, the packaging leaves little to be desired (not even a jewel box or DigiPak). Hope they can finance a tour of the U.S. really soon so I can hear these jams in a live setting.

Cringeworthy Crass Cornershop Comes NOT EVEN Close
Lordy lord, dear oh dear what have we here? What on EARTH is this rambling mess supposed to be pray tell? Rock? Pop? Indie? And what's with the FOURTEEN MINUTE Gospel outro?Image this, image some individuals who come from the greatest living civilisation (India) on earth who, find themselves in Blighty with all its myriad of technical influences and technological advances, its artistic freedoms and its social mélange imagine the total sum of ALL that... and then imagine someone pissing all that away and producing THIS. For, if we are to cut to the chase, to speak truth to power and tell it like it is, is EXACTLY what these talentless halfwits have done. Well done, bravo, three cheers, hip-hip, hooray! Congratulations for giving the middle finger to both your entire collective cultural heritage and also that of your adopted nation. I hope you sleep well at night with that weight on your shoulders - my suggestion, don't try and swim or you'll drown!

Poor Retread
I hated this. It sounds like the same number - a pale imitation of an earlier track - done over and over again with some changes to the words. Get When I was Born For the Seventh Time instead.

They've done it again!
Whilst having to admit that this album isn't much of a progression from "Handcream for a Generation", I would have to ask why it needed to be? I spent an eternity being gutted that Tjinder and his cohorts had apparently bowed out on such a high note, and now I am nothing less than elated that they have bowed back in again on an equally high note. It has to be said that sometimes Mr Singh has a slight propensity to dabble, and even though 99 times out of a hundred the results do pay off (whoever thought they would pull off such a stunning result by covering "The Mighty Quinn", let alone the surprisingly awesomew result of Clinton's grooved up version of "Sing Hosannah"), ocassionally they do get it wrong. In my opinion, the little Reggae/Calypso experiment on this album, "Operation Push", is less than successful. It isn't enough however to make me reduce my 5 out of 5 review because lets face it, when did you last listen to an album and find it to be prefect from start to finish? Even "The Last Waltz" by The Band had the questionable Van Morrison contributions. The high points of "Judy" would have to be "History in the Making" and the glorious Gospel workout "The Tuned on Truth" that finishes procedings. Please don't make us wait another seven years!
