A+ Great Source to Review
Even though I'm familiar with computer hardware and software I found the A+ very helpful. It is written clearly and organized in a very good manner. The chapters cover each subject concisely and fully. One small complaint is that the minute you publish the book the book is behind the technology available. I don't think any publisher could keep up unless the book was on-line and there you could make changes faster. Use the book to review for your A+ tests or if you are just beginning work through the whole thing to understand PC maintenance. I think if you are going to buy yourself one book to help you make sense of present day computer systems this is the book to have.

Great textbook / CPU manual...for test
Excellent book, although the author does have a tendency to repeat herself. I would say one of it's strengths is it really facilitated learning. It provides great step by step guides for things like installing a processor next to pictures and diagrams to explain the parts. Also it seems like it would be great as a reference book or even a how-to book.As a study guide for the COMPTIA test though, I don't think it is all that great, maybe 3 stars, mainly because it is somewhat disorganized as a text, and also b/c of the redundancy, which I think other people have mentioned. For example, some topics, like file system formats, are explained in several different chapters, and the explanations given are the basically the same. The info is all very accurate and easy to understand, but for pure test-study prep, I would recommend a more condensed text, with maybe this as backup.

More learning than I thought I could, in about 10% of the time I thought I'd need.
For a couple decades, I put off learning what I found in the course that used this textbook. I was always worried how long it would take me to learn all that computer jargon, all those parts, all those software procedures. This text is remarkably clear. Normally I do much better in a classroom environment, but even with the class being taught online, I was able to learn thoroughly, nearly all because of this textbook. After the course, I followed the instructor's suggestion to buy an electronic edition, which as a searchable document, is an excellent reference.

Good learning visuals
I'm not going to rehash what others wrote in the 4 and 5 star category, I'll only say, Dido!I loved the numerous pictures, the colors, the diagrams used in the book, and the end of chapter summaries, reviews, etc. They all aid in the learning process. The book is big, massive, and heavy, but necessary to contain the content. I just finished reading the first 5 chapters and I look forward to reading the rest of the book.

Book not ready for Kindle
I purchased the hardcopy book and the Kindle version. The hardcopy book is great but large and heavy to carry around. So I purchased the Kindle version. I was very disappointed in the Kindle version. On other books if you enlarge the print, it rearranges the print so it all fits in the window of the Kindle. This book doesn't. If you enlarge the print you have to continue slide the print back and forth so you could see what wasn't on the screen. I got dizzy and found it wasn't worth it. Also if you enlarged any of the tables or figures, they were blurry and you stood a better chance of seeing what the picture was but leaving it small and getting a magnifying glass.

Graphics are fuzzy
I bought this in lieu of carrying around a heavy textbook (I have edition 6 in hardback) on campus. The graphics are awful and need to be redone in order to get a higher rating. I tried loading it on my computer, my netbook, my HP TP, and my Samsung Galaxy S3 ... the graphics were fuzzy on all of these devices except for that it wouldn't load with the Kindle app on my Samsung Galaxy S3.The book in general is pretty good although it assumes at times that you know certain things that are not expected of a person just starting out in the electronics field. A few more tweaks and it would be easier to relate to.Since this book is used as a textbook, it would be nice to have at least an insert that tells the differences between the last 2 editions. My college class is using the textbook in the previous edition and chapters have been modified and moved around which makes it difficult to make sure you are covering the same material as the professor assigns. Edition 7 wasn't available in digital when my class started but edition 8 was.
