It's different, but that's not bad
Just be aware that it's different from other pillows. It's not lightweight and fluffy, or even particularly soft--the weight of the Sobakawa might break someone's neck if you used it in a pillow fight. The buckwheat husks provide a firm support, and there's enough space within the pillow to allow you to shape the husks to best fit the contours of your neck and head. I use a small Sobakawa on top of a medium-sized one, which creates a little step that accommodates my shoulder when I want to sleep on my side; I also slide the small pillow forward to line up with the medium one when I want to sleep on my back. But the best thing about Sobakawas, and the reason I've used them for years, is that they do not get hot. At least, the buckwheat husks don't. The cotton case the husks are contained in will hold a little heat as will any pillow case you put it in, but compared to other pillows, the Sobakawa stays much, much cooler, and that makes a big difference in my ability to sleep comfortably. My only real complaint with them is that they've made it nearly impossible for me to sleep on other pillows, and since Sobakawas are pretty heavy and bulky, it's difficult to take them along when I travel, which means I usually sleep pretty poorly in hotels. But I suppose that's true for most people. In any case, I definitely recommend Sobakawa pillows if you're willing to give yourself some time to get used to them. You will end up sleeping better, but they feel different than the pillows most people--most Americans, anyway--use, so there it will likely take at least a few nights to get accustomed to the different feel. But aren't a few night, or even a few weeks, worth it to sleep better and more comfortably in the long term?

Great support but too small and overpriced - bought elsewhere
I'm giving this buckwheat hull pillow 4 out of 5 stars. The product quality is excellent, but there are some practical issues. This is genuinely a good product. The buckwheat hull filling provides the firm, strong support that I personally prefer - it's much better than memory foam for my needs. I really appreciate how it maintains its shape and doesn't compress like traditional pillows do. The support is consistent throughout the night, which helps with my neck and spine alignment. However, I have two significant complaints: size and price. This pillow is simply too small for my preferences, and the price point is quite high for what you get. When I calculated the cost per cubic inch of filling, it just didn't seem like good value. The quality is definitely there - the buckwheat hulls are clean, the cover is well-made, and the construction feels durable. If you're someone who likes firm support and this size works for you, and if price isn't a major concern, then this would be a great choice. Unfortunately, I ended up purchasing from a different seller who offered a larger size at a better price point. It's a shame because the product itself is well-made, but the size and cost factors made me look elsewhere. I'd recommend shopping around before settling on this particular option.

Best pillow ever!
What is not to love about this Sobakawa pillow? This is my second one. The previous I had for 18 years. It is filled with buckwheat hulls so it is pliable and shapable. I have a condition with my neck and regular standard pillows cause me much pain. It took me only one night to get used to it as it being filled with the buckwheat hulls it makes a noise. But once your head is on it, there is no more noise unless you are moving around. I get better support with the Sobakawa and no "wry neck" issues. The pillow does have some weight to it, not lightweight like a foam pillow. Works great for side, back or tummy sleepers. You can adjust the amount of hulls in the pillow as it has a zippered access. Personally, I have tried so many pillows in my lifetime that I had about given up when I came upon the first one I had. This was a definite game changer for me. And yes, there will come a day when you will have to purchase a new pillow. It is after all filled with the buckwheat hulls and over time they will break down. But mine lasted 18 years so I am not complaining one bit.

What I wanted but case is thin and can't open it to remove some of the fill
A good pillow is a must. After trying all kinds of fill, buckwheat is my clear favorite. You can mold it like a down pillow, but it holds its shape better. I can shape it like clay during the night. I can carve out neck support when sleeping on my back, I can bunch it up and not have a soar neck or should when sleeping on my side, and I can flatten it down when I'm sleeping on my stomach. I also like how heavy buckwheat pillows feel. Just a quality fill for sleeping. What I don't like about this pillow is that the case it comes in doesn't feel too tick and sturdy. There's a lot of weight in a buckwheat pillow, and I'm worried it will tear at some point, and I'll have seeds all over my bed. (Hasn't happened, though.) I also don't like that there isn't a zipper on the case so that I can remove some of the fill -- which I really want to do. It's just a few handfuls of fill, too much for my taste. So I might buy another case for it, tear this one open and use that.

Small but mighty, the only pillow to help my neck pain and let me sleep
Living with Lupus for over 20 years and battling painful neck arthritis, finding the perfect pillow has been an ongoing quest for me. Countless nights of discomfort and restless sleep led me on a frustrating journey of trial and error with various pillows, all ending up in disappointment and wasted money. However, my search finally came to an end when I discovered the Sobakawa Traditional Buckwheat Standard Size Pillow. This is my second time buying this pillow and I am just as happy with my purchase. Living with Lupus brings its own set of challenges, and coupled with my neck arthritis and bone spurs, finding a pillow that could accommodate my specific needs seemed like an impossible task. Many pillows I tried lacked the necessary support, causing more pain and discomfort. What sets this pillow apart is its unique design and filling. The Sobakawa pillow is filled with buckwheat hulls, which conform to the contours of my neck and provide excellent support. The hulls offer just the right balance of firmness and flexibility, allowing my neck to rest in a comfortable and natural position throughout the night. It's worth mentioning that the durability of this pillow is outstanding. Unlike other pillows I've tried, the Sobakawa Buckwheat Pillow maintains its shape and support even after extended use. It has become a reliable companion in my sleep routine, bringing consistent relief night after night. I am just now purchasing my second one after two years of constant use. If you, like me, have spent countless nights searching for the perfect pillow to alleviate neck pain and sleep peacefully, I highly recommend giving the Sobakawa Buckwheat Pillow a try. It may seem small, but its impact is immeasurable. Say goodbye to restless nights and embrace the relief and comfort this amazing pillow brings.

Could be a great pillow, but buyer be aware check your seams on the pillow.
I got myself one of these 8 weeks ago and liked it so much that I got one for my wife for her birthday in July. She has had the pillow barely 6 weeks and noticed something that felt sharp poking through her zippered silk pillowcase for the last few days. She opened it today and saw that this pillow had come un-sewn at the seam where the tag is sewn onto the pillow. There were buckwheat hulls spilled all over inside her pillowcase. The tag came completely off and as you can see in the photos the holes from the thread are still intact, meaning this was not sewn in very well. We tried to contact customer service but apparently after just a short 6 weeks we are out of our window for replacement or help with this obviously defective item. Donโt waste your money on this pillow as you will literally be throwing your money away. It would be a great pillow if it had any sort of customer service available. We understand if weโd have this a long time and know we would just have to replace it, but having this happen so soon after getting it is very disappointing.

This is the best pillow ever made (forget other reviews!)
Amazon gave a warning that this item is usually returned. Why I had no idea. Yes, the pillow is small, and I bought the Queen size pillow first. Although the Queen size is good, the filling has a way of spreading out so not as much support as the smaller one. I have had surgery (spinal surgery at C2 and C3), and need very strong support with a pillow with thickness. With this pillow, I have no neck pain when sleeping. The value for the money of this item is perfect, with it being even better than the Queen size. Again, the thickness is important, and the raised height is perfect for the neck. People that return this item have not given it a chance. I am glad to see this product is still on the market.

small but comfortable
Why did you choose this product over others?: Yes, comfortable and cool for sleeping. I was surprised that it is quite small - I will have to alter (sew) a special pillowcase for it.

The perfect pillow!
Background story: I had shoulder pain for years because I bench pressed too hard and my friend didn't catch the bar on time and my shoulder gave out. I tried massotherapy, chiropractic treatment and shoulder exercises/stretches, as well as rest to solve my problem. Nothing really worked and I knew that I just needed a good pillow to support my neck until it recovered properly. I tried numerous pillows to solve this issue and this is the only pillow that actually cured my shoulder/neck pain after a single night's use! The following days have been even better, surprisingly. It is smaller than I expected, but I like it because I can get closer to my wife at night to cuddle her and not worry about having a pillow covering her face when I get closer to her. It also gives room for our cat to join us ๐ Definitely get this pillow. I sleep on my side and sometimes my back. I did not regret my purchase at all! No smell, very comfortable and it got rid of my shoulder/neck pain! It's more affordable than surgery, so it's worth the price

Small but mighty.
I saw some reviews before purchasing that the pillow was smaller than expected. It is smaller than a standard pillow (about 48ร34cm) as I believe is listed in description. So be aware if ur expecting something larger! The pillow itself is great. You can sort of mold it and it does feel like it stays nive and cool all night.

Perfect
This pillow took me a couple of nights to get used to because itโs firmer and heavier than a normal pillow, but now I really like it. My neck feels supported, and I wake up with less stiffness. It also stays cool through the night, which is a big plus. The only downsides are the slight rustling sound when you move and that itโs a bit smaller than expected. Overall, great choice if you want firm support and cooler sleep.
