Awesome!
Been wanting this tool for a long time! Ideal was demoing all their "Cool Tools" at the ISC West Convention. A bit on the expensive side, but will be worth it for all the time & hassle it should save. This tester does EVERYTHING except install the cable & put the connectors on for you! I have only had this for a short time, but I have already saved some time and aggravation. I bought it for the networking capabilities but it also works great for Coax & Phone systems. Plus the ring generator is LOADED with tone options. Plugged it in to a network & got the scoop on the LAN - Almost gives you more than you wanted to know.... Almost. Ha!I find myself feeling like a kid with a new toy every time I whip it out! Makes testing cable more FUN (AND ACCURATE) than it used to be! "Just Way Cool Of A Tool"

Wish I had bought mine years ago.
Great tester - does what it claims and does it very well for a reasonable price. Make sure you understand your needs and the features offered before you buy. This one tests cables real time with constant updates, no need to press a button (after you turn it on). This means you can wiggle a cable and see if it holds up. Also with the distance readings you can tell which end of the cable termination is likely bad (as far as open/shorts go) - this can be a huge time saver.Note that Ideal makes three different models (basic, plus and pro) with different abilities of the VDV II - this is the most advanced of the three. Look at Ideal's website for details as the descriptions by the vendors on this site can be confusing - some seem to mix up the features of the three models.

Great for the price
I'm a cable technician and needed an upgrade from my cheap southwire tester. This kicks butt! The display is clean and easy to read. Tests fairly quickly.I was even surprised that it reads out the PoE voltage from a switch! Normally you just get a symbol saying there is PoE or connected to a device but not an actual multimeter readout.I will be keeping this puppy in my pouch for a long time.

Doesnt appear to run very well with lithium batteries. ...
Doesnt appear to run very well with lithium batteries. But does well with alkaline. Unfortunately a bit bulky, but its feature packed. Bit on the expensive end. But you cant beat it with the features it provides. Solid quality!

Good price vs capabilities tool, highly recommend it.
As far as I'm concerned, this tester paid for itself the first time I used it. Cheaper units need both ends terminated before you test. This one will tell you on the first termination. No guessing as to which end needs redone. POE and phone voltage tests are a nice plus. I'm seriously considering getting it's big brother, the lanxplorer pro ($3600-ish price range, ouch!) No negatives so far.

This product worked great for less than a year
This product worked great for less than a year. Then the display wouldn't register pair 1 even testing known good cable. That was fixed under warranty but now the display shows remote 12356678 when testing. This unit hangs in work truck in the case most of the time. I am trying to find a fix but would not spend this amount of money again knowing the quality.

'Punch and pray' is no way to go through life: get a real cable tester.
"If you haven't tested, you're not done." I must say that a billion times a day. "But testing takes so much time", they whine. The Ideal R158003 splits the difference between 'punch and pray' and 'professionally, rigorously tested, ISO/TSA certified'.This tester is at the low end of the testing scale: it doesn't qualify bandwidth, it doesn't do any protocol testing, doesn't pull a DHCP address from the connected network. But, for all but the rare edge case, if this tester says the cable is good, it's good. It does tell you which network speeds are available on the port and if PoE is active. And, unlike a a real Network Cable Tester , doesn't cost $1,200 or more.Throw a 12-pack of the tester targets in your cart; testing and documentation goes even faster.Get it right the first time, save yourself a repeat visit or two, and this device has paid for itself.

IDEAL R158003 cable tester
Network cable tester - to pricy for the functions that it does. as a cable tester it does not beep when the cable pass, there is a check mark with the remote number. If there is a signal on the Cat5/6 cable is shows an icon of switch shows up. if the signal is low a bunch of o's shows next to the 1-8 wires, no speed is measured. connecting a computer to the same cable it works. You need to buy an accessory to use the toner (which provided free with the device in Europe). The POE feature works. The advantage is that you can use the 12 remotes for a several cables done at the same time (ideal 158050).You might consider the less expensive model based on your needs.

Saved you time and money in location of cable faults
The kit is great for finding faults on cables. Saved me a lot of time in location of a cable fault on 110 meter cable run the system found the fault 11 meters from the terminal end so just removed this bit of cable. So in terms of time and effort it was fantastic.Wish there was some degree of waterproofing to enable use outside in more challenging weather but cannot have it all
