A Solid Conclusion for Humphries’ Tenure as Lead Writer!
Sam Humphries’s “Harley Quinn Vol. 5: Hollywood or Die” collects “Harley Quinn” nos. 70–75 written by Humphries with art by Sami Basri, Abel, Riley Rossmo, Nicola Scott, Ngozi Ukazu, and Joe Quinones, colors by Hi-Fi, Ivan Plascencia and Annette Kwok, and letters by Dave Sharpe. The story picks up with Harley Quinn in Los Angeles following the events of the “Heroes in Crisis” crossover. Humphries story sees Harley hanging out on the West Coast to lay low, though she belongs to a wrestling ring for various super-powered heroes and villains similarly laying low. When her friend is killed, Harley looks into the murder, investigating it film noir-style. Humphries executes the mystery well, pairing Harley with Booster Gold for added comic effect.During the course of her investigation, Harley uncovers the various elements that currently twist our society to prevent us from making substantive, positive change. Humphries writes, “…Loomin’ over us, a bunch o’ fancy people tryin’ to keep us down! Filthy Nazis an’ rich b------s an’ dirty cults an’ online hoaxers… They’re fightin’ ta make us feel trapped an’ hopeless in our lives” (issue no. 73). Harley also finds the hope to fight the rich bigots with their boots on the necks of the people. The volume concludes with issue no. 75, a final celebratory look back on Harley’s anniversary featuring an appearance from Punchline. It both offers a coda to Harley’s grief over the loss of her mom and a prelude to the subsequent Joker War storyline. This is Humphries’ final volume as head writer on the “Harley Quinn” series after taking it over from Amanda Conner, Jimmy Palmiotti, and Frank Tieri, who shepherded the series through the New 52, DC Rebirth, and DC Universe re-launches. Following this series, Stephanie Phillips and Riley Rossmo will re-launch the “Harley Quinn” title again in March 2021. Humphries ends on a strong note worthy of the character and the heart of her story arc.
