Durable
This is my third pair of MX409 shoes. The last pair I bought was in 2015 (center), and they are still holding up (but they are white so they look dirty no matter how much I clean them). The pair before that I bought in 2013 (left), and the tread finally obliterated itself beyond glue being able to fix it after 4.5 years of faithful service. These are not as well padded as the 2013 MX409's, but they are by no means uncomfortable. Since 2015 the tread design has been changed so the tread does not fall apart in the same manner as in 2013. The current design is nearly identical to the 2015 shoe, except the shoe is noticeably longer inside and out. If my foot did not require the 12 4E width, I could have gotten away with an 11 in length. These shoes are used for ranging from everyday walking (I walk a lot), to running at least 3 miles a week, to light hiking. I wear these things everywhere and they have proven to be a durable and comfortable shoe. The 2013 pair, having lasted almost 5 years, sold me on the MX409 and I won't buy anything else unless this 2017 pair turns out to be junk.

New Balance MX409
I find that shoe fit is a very subjective topic. Each person's foot is different, so what fits me may not work for you. With that said, I really like these shoes. I'm 63 years old, wear a size 10, and have narrow feet, especially in the toe box. I went through five other pair of tennis shoes, including Nike and Adidas, before I found these. The problem was either too wide a toe box, not enough arch support, or lack of padding. The New Balance just simply work well for me. I've worn them to the gym three days a week for the past six months and they're holding up great, with no foot fatigue. Excellent lateral support, and plenty of cushion for impact exercises. They fit me so well that I recently ordered another pair for every day use. With Amazon's excellent return policy, give them a try. If they don't fit, send them back.

No arch support.
These shoes do not have an arch support. I placed Dr Scholl's inserts in them, but they were so tight in the toe, even though I wear a size 10 shoe, which these are. After a half a block I had to go back home and use my old NB's The New Balance brand, I believe, has been cheapened. They run small, but some reviews say that some of the models are true to size. It would be nice if NB were to say which, ahead of time. NB constantly discontinues models. So, if you find something you like, you won't be able to buy it again. And they do not provide any crossover chart to say what they think takes the place of the former model. Too frustrating. After years of NB, I'm trying a different brand.

Too small all over
Without a doubt, these sneakers are at least a half if not a full size too small. I ordered 2 pair given the price and both were frighteningly small. And look at the lacing in the photo. You cannot easily lace the top hole because the shoelaces are too short other than to make a very small bow. The 2 stars is because overall the sneaker wasn't so poorly designed from a looks and build perspective. But now the worst - the traction on the bottom is non-existent. I was slipping on tile floor walking with these as they have a relative flat bottom even though there is an appearance in photos of potentially having some traction. The bottom soles are also more plastic in nature than rubber so they do not grip floors. These are easily the worst purchase I have made and am greatly disappointed in New Balance. I would never buy these as a cross trainer and would advise only using on a rubber surface or one which naturally produces some higher level of friction.

tight fit
Have always been happy with this exact shoe when bought (tried on) at a local Kohl's. My husband likes to buy 2 pairs at a time but Kohl's seldom has 2 pairs in the same size so I decided to buy off of Amazon. These shoes are the same size and number I have bought him for years. He said from the moment he put them on that they were too tight but he wanted to wear them for awhile to be sure it wasn't just him (since they were "identical" to what he had worn for years.) I put the 2nd pair away. The shoes never got better and we had to go out and buy a pair, locally. Now when I finally get around to try to return the 2nd pair, it is too late. (my own fault) From our own experience and reading other reviews, BUYER BEWARE.

What happened to New Balance quality?
I've purchased the MX409 for years and was able to wear the shoes until they completely wore out, usually about 8 months. My most recent pair lasted 1 month and one shoe started squeaking loudly. After testing all possible squeak sources, I determined that it was internal to the shoe. My wife has also been loyal to New Balance WW577 shoes and reports the same thing happening with her most recent purchase. New Balance is not a cheap shoe and I expect better. Wonder if it's time to switch?

Good shoes
My husband was in need of some new shoes, and he always relies on new balance for his work shoes because of their fit, the comfort, and the wide shoe fits him well. He works in a manufacturing plant and is on his feet all day. My husband is also really hard on shoes, has super flat feet, and they are wide. So he needs a shoe that can take a beating. New balance makes several shoes that are strong at the base of the shoe, like a hiking shoe would be, and they are thicker so my husband gets more wear out of them. The black color is nice, and doesn't show so much dirt, like his brown ones do. This is a nice looking shoe. These are very comfortable shoes, and he is very happy with them. The price is fair, and I like that if they don't fit, amazon will return them quickly and that makes life easy for us!These shoes are not leather, but they seem to hold up like leather ones do, We have tried shoes from wally and those just don't last very long. We go back to the NB every time. So if you are hard on shoes, are on your feet all day, or have wide feet, this is a good shoe.
