Kephart's original how-to manual for the outdoors! This is the original handbook from the master of outdoors instruction. In this deluxe Legacy Edition reprint of the first version of Kephart's masterwork (in its final fifth edition printing), learn all of the essential, but often forgotten skills of classic camping and outdoors travel, including camping, camp cookery, clothing, hiking and wayfinding, outdoors gear and outfits, beating bugs and the elements, handling emergency situations, woods tools and axemanship, catching your dinner by hunting and fishing, and tanning skins and pelts. This first version of this book (in its final fifth edition, printed 1912) is the shorter, more concise publication compared to Kephart's later expansion of this work, called Camping and Woodcraft from 1916-1917 (over 800 pages total sold as two volumes). Note: This printing is of the fifth edition of the first version (1912), not the first edition (1906). It has been expanded by the author from the previous four editions. Review: Handy Guide - Great observations and recommendations for living outdoors by a legendary woodsman. It'll be a handy guide after society collapses into barbarism. Review: READ LEARN AND PRATICE - This is a great book for both beginners to bushcrafting / deep-woods campers or all-out pros who have tramped the woods for years. I have been stomping the woods of Northern Michigan now for a little over 40 years and have learned a thang or two from this very book. I know everyone likes to think no one can be taught anything when you get to my age of 60 plus years, but you can. Anyone who thinks they know it all knows nothing. A lesson I have learned time and again. Buy this book, my friend, and learn something. Especially you, newcomers and youngsters.

Lard Heavy
Really fun look back at the time before glamping. What I don't like is this book looks like it was scanned from the original so the typeface is hard to read and of inconsistent appearance. Same with the illustrations that look like they were done on a bad scanner. Fun to see the recipes but they must have been lard crazy back then. I don't think I'll be dressing my game any time soon or rendering any pigs.

Interesting but outdated.
This is from an American point of view, so some of the things in here weren't relevant to me. There wasn't much to be learned here either for me as I've read most of the things in other books. When I bought this book, I knew nothing about it, I bought it because of the title. After buying it though, I quickly found out that it was first printed in 1905, so it's severely outdated and only some of it was transferable. Finding out how things were done back then was interesting for me and it was an easy read due to the layout.

A must read for anyone in bush crafting or camping or survival.
Excellent book written by a man who is famous for his skills in the deep forests of North America. Although the book was published in 1905 it contains information that is still relevant today. For anyone who goes into the wid this book is a must read.
