I cherished this book as an adult and think it would be a great but non-preachy way to teach kids an important piece ...
A gripping story about freedom that draws connections between African American slaves and Native Americans. It also makes a river and its place in Mississippi between plantation salves and Choctaw Indians three-dimensional and hauntingly real. I never knew that Choctaw Indians helped slaves escape. I cherished this book as an adult and think it would be a great but non-preachy way to teach kids an important piece of our history. The illustrations with their subdued palette are nothing short of gorgeous—strong, moving and original. The book won several literary awards, and it's clear why. For ages 9 - 12.

A beautiful story for all ages
The story told in this book is at once simple and magical. It tells a side of American history that are not discussed often enough: the relationship between Southern Indian peoples and African Americans. This story illustrates some of that shared history, in the friendship between Martha Tom and Little Mo, and in the ways they each help one another as the tale unfolds. The art is gorgeous, and the story is equally beautiful. It is a book to share with young and old!

BEAUTIFUL in every way
This is a story about many virtues, unfolding in a natural and subtle way; hope and hopefulness, kindness, racial justice. The story is beautiful, and beautifully told. The illustrations are beautiful. The quality of the book (page thickness, sturdy) is excellent.

Great American story
Great American story for kids. Especially good for Thanksgiving time to show how native Americans are not just the bad guys in a game of "cowboys & indians" or the "helpful squaw". A good introduction to topic of slavery in America. This story and artwork are beautiful.

An original and well-written story
If you are a teacher or parent looking to introduce the intersection of Native America and African-American cultures in Antebellum America, this is the book. The story is touching and the illustrations are lovely. This story will allow you to introduce ideas of freedom, the Underground Railroad, and more to children. My 4th graders enjoyed it during Black History Month.

Weaving Black and American Indian lives together in one beautiful story...
A stunning tale of courage and collaboration that brings together to intertwined stories of slaves and free Black people and the Choctaw people. As a parent with a Black Native child it's hard to find depictions of Native life or lore or culture where he sees himself as a Black person. This book is a little too intense for my anxious 6 year old but by next birthday I think he will be ready for it and really find it meaningful. The writing and illustrations are a joy to read and it's an important addition to any collection of children's books about American history, about strong girls and women, about Native American history and about the story of Black people from slavery to freedom.

Lovely book
What a credit to the history of Native American to finally be acknowledged as a critical part of emancipation of the African American populations. Beautifully written and illustrated.

Seeking freedom
A wonderful story of people helping people, based on old Choctaw legends. Bok Chitto is a river; on one side are Choctaw lands and on the other are the lands of plantation owners and slaves. When a group of slaves learn their family is to be sold to another plantation, the slaves use their friendship with the Choctaw people to find a way to escape across Bok Chitto and into freedom on Choctaw land.

Versklavung.
