From an award-winning diabetes care & education specialist, this all-in-one book is a comprehensive resource for the millions of people with diabetes who use insulin—now revised and updated. Few diabetes books focus specifically on the day-to-day issues facing people who use insulin. Gary Scheiner provides the tools to "think like a pancreas" to successfully master the art and science of matching insulin to the body's ever-changing needs. Comprehensive, free of medical jargon, and packed with useful information not readily available elsewhere, such as: ·day-to-day blood glucose monitoring and management ·designing an insulin program to best match your needs and lifestyle ·how to get the best results from CGM and automated insulin delivery systems ·new insulin formulations and combinations ·detailed strategies for meeting your personal goals ·what drugs like Trulicity, Ozempic and Mounjaro mean for you and your health ·and much more Whether you take insulin once a day or take multiple daily injections, use a stand-alone pump or an automated insulin delivery system, Think Like a Pancreas is your go-to guide! Review: Excellent book that actually put my insulin therapy on track! - After almost 5 years as a Type 2 Diabetic I finally reached the point where the oral medications no longer worked and insulin was prescribed. That was about 5 months ago and since that day my insulin experience had been filed with frustration and disappointment. No matter what I did I rarely got my glucose to stay below 250-300. I didn't really know what I was doing other than shooting myself 4 to 5 times a day with insulin in the hopes that a miracle would take place and my body would eventually respond favorably. I bought this book as a last ditch effort, hoping that it might give me some direction. I began carefully calculating the carb counts of my meals and the dosing of my Basal & Bolus injections according to the formulas & tables in the book and that miracle happened! Within 48 hours my daytime insulin was down to between 128 & 150. My morning glucose levels were an acceptible 120 to 180. (still working on fine tuning that). If you are frustrated with the results of your insulin therapy and are serious about getting it under control, this book, in conjunction with a big book of food carbohydrate values may very well do the trick! The book provides the same types of helpful information for insulin pump users as well. If you are diabetic and your diabetes is out of control you can't go wrong with this book. After all, isn't your continued health worth the price of a paperback book? Give it a try! Review: Great in depth guide - I’m so glad this was my first book after my daughter was diagnosed type 1. I felt like it answered so many questions I had and hadn’t even thought to ask yet. It does need some updates as the tech changes, but I see they’re releasing a new version. This book did not push a particular lifestyle. So many seem to have a specific (often unrealistic) diet they’re pushing, which is just not what you need with a diabetic kindergartener. They have to deal with enough without having to eat unsweetened chia seed pudding in the morning. I also feel like there is a lot of misinformation out there, even among experienced type 1 parents. I felt like this quickly put me ahead of the curve in knowledge. My only caveat is that it is more information-heavy, so if you’re looking for an inspirational or emotional perspective, it’s not really that. I personally lived the history of diabetes care included at the beginning! Makes you appreciate the tech we have!

BUY THIS BOOK!!
If you or someone you know has diabetes of any kind, LADA (which I have), type 1 or 2, please buy this book! Even if you aren't diabetic, just knowing how sugar effects the body! I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in January of 2022. I spent the next 2 years chasing my tail and getting no where! I was bouncing between type 2 and then type 1. In January of 2024 I received the diagnosis of LADA and finally everything started to make more sense! I am having a hard time finding information about my disease and through searching for books about it on Amazon I found this book. In just the first few pages I learned so much! This book should be given to every diabetic and their families at the time of diagnosis! If everyone was educated in what is happening in our bodies with the elevated blood glucose, I feel like it would make a world of difference in how we approach our care and how we support those around us with the disease! Whether you take insulin or not, this book is a MUST READ!! Please, do yourself a favor, and for your quality of life, BUY THIS BOOK! And after you do, tell others about it!

Informative, user friendly, and easily understood.
As a newly diagnosed diabetic I needed to learn as much about diabetes as I could. This book did the trick and was fun to read. The helpful hints in the shaded areas on many of the pages pushed home the important concepts to be remembered. There weren't a lot of complex ideas that needed head scratching and rereading to understand. Things were explained in a simple manner that made sense and were easy to conceptualize. I would definately suggest this book to anyone needing to take care of themselves or someone they love.

An excellent "how to" book for insuin users
"How to Think Like a Pancreas" is up do date and full of practical knowledge of how the pancreas normally operates and why insulin users experience various symptoms when trying to compensate for a non-working pancreas. There is advice on how to diagnose excessive highs and lows, how to set baseline and bolus insulin levels, and how to live a more normal life. Definitely a book I will be keeping around and referring to in the future.
