The Social Skills Picture Book: Teaching play, emotion, and communication to children with autism

I love that this book give practical situational guidance into many aspects of the social realm in easy to understand words and pictures. It is straight forward and has a great section in the beginning of the book explaining to the parent how best use this resource. My son is high functioning and doesn't have as many social issues as some so I thought this book might not apply to him. What I am finding is that he appreciates the whole book, it boosts his confidence in the skills he already possess and adds guidance to those areas where he struggles. I think this book would apply to a broad spectrum of children, not only those on the Autism Spectrum but also those with social anxiety or who are terribly shy. Knowledge is power, and the social aspect of our society is full of rules...having a resource to help kids understand those rules is invaluable.

My HFA son was resistant to reading this as it wasn't about one of his current obsessions--so I read to him and slowly it gained his interest. Some stories are more relative to his social needs than others. I now find him reading it to himself. He gets a kick out of the "wrong" way and likes to act it out with me. There are some scenarios that are spot on for him. He looked shocked when I read one of them about being a poor loser-- (as that is one of his worst issues with neighbors and playing) We have only had the book for a couple of weeks-- so I can't report a big change in behavior BUT I do notice more of an understanding from him. If I see him getting worked up, I mention "remember ... is this the right or wrong way?" and he nods. It has opened up more of a discussion from him. I think it will be a great resource for helping elementary age kids with autism navigate the social scene.

This social skills picture book is instrumental in helping my son learn every day life skills through pictures. I borrowed it from a friend and began using it with him. When she asked me to return it, I decided I needed one too. It keeps my son engaged for at least 20-30 minutes at a time and he is communicating with me through questions and giving answers. I have a lot of books and there are none that quite match up to this one. It's a "must have".

I had the privledge of seeing Dr. Baker present recently at a conference with Temple Grandin. Have to say that this book is great and my son took an interest in it right away. He is HF, and our biggest challenges are going to include social skills and social nuances. The photos grabbed his interest immediately and he has already demonstrated some "carry over" of the skills taught in this book, after using it for a short time. I am glad we bought this, it is something we will be able to use for years to come.

I have been wanting to purchase this book for some time now and I am glad I did! My two oldest sons have ASD diagnosis and I especially worry about my oldest ever "getting" social skills even though he is brilliant. I think the photographs make it so much more real. Also, the words used here are words we were already using with his ABA therapists! I shared the book with his therapists and they were so excited, both are going to buy the book for themselves. It is a wonderful resource, one I think many parents should utilize, not just parents of kids on the spectrum.

I expected two things from this book. One, I expected it to be a book I could look at together with my young autistic son to teach him social skills. It turned out to be a how-to book for making your own social skills material. Useful for teachers and ambitious parents, but not really directly useful for kids. Two, I expected the aesthetic quality of the book to resemble the cover. It turned out that the book is based on a PowerPoint presentation, with relatively unprofessional photography and text layout. The beautiful photograph on the cover is *not* indicative of the quality of the other photos in the book. The other photos were taken in real classroom settings, and thus have clutter in the background and poor lighting conditions. I was also irritated by the hard-to-read text formatting (lines of text extend across the wide pages, instead of being broken into narrower, more readable columns of text). Luckily, the spiral-bound format was more user-friendly. All in all, I learned a few things about breaking down social skills and other helpful basics, but the book wasn't what I expected.

This book is a godsend to any parent and child dealing with Aspergers, add, adhd ... trust me - but to be perfectly honest, every parent should read it with their kids especially children that learn better visually ... but who doesn't learn better visually using real life photos of classroom and social behavior? This is a must have for EVERY child that is entering preschool and/or kindergarten. Every library needs this book ... tell yours! I read alot of books and have never felt a need to post a review until now. Teaching our children how to fit in socially in the world, whether they have *disabilities* or not, is our job. This is the tool every parent needs to encourage socially acceptable behavior prior to bad behavior being the issue at hand! We can tell children until we are blue in the face, but this shows them in a way they can understand ... real life examples they face or will face as the enter school. Must have.

I really like this book. I wasn’t sure at first but the more I look through it, the more I like it. I have one child with autism (11 years old) and another one with ADHD(10 years old). Both struggle with basic social skills. I think this book will be a big help to them. I actually think this is going to be a great resource for all my children, even the ones without a diagnoses. Only wish it was hardcover, as paperback books sometimes meet an unfortunate end here. I plan to cover it with contact paper though and I think that will help.

A little outdated in terms of the language used but still a good guide for doing your own social stories

Il est clairement indiqué les attitudes correctes (encadrées en vert) et celles à éviter (encadrées en rouge). Un plus pour les parents qui veulent aider leur ado à vivre le mieux possible le collège, ou pour les professionnels qui font une rééducation des situations sociales

My eight year old daughter has Autism Spectrum Disorder and she really enjoys looking at this book. It was recommended to me by her class helper and they use the disc version at her main stream school. It really is the best book that I have found to help teach her the best ways of interacting with others as for a lot of people with Autism social skills have to be directly taught. It is written in a very clear concise way with large clear photo's of real-life situations and simple sentences with suggestions of the wrong and right way to behave. I would also recommend this book for children with behavioural problems. We use this book all the time and will probably always be used. I strongly recommend it. It is quite expensive but well worth it.
