Updated edition is great!!
It seems like the latest edition of this book has resolved a lot of the complaints I read in previous comments. For starters, it’s in color instead of black and white and has lots of photos throughout the sections. There are also drawings of common goldfish health issues, which I found useful for identification.I read a lot of reviews about there being too many QR codes, but mine only has them in the treatment section. I ended up using a few to order some medications when my Oranda was suffering from fin rot and it cleared right up.Overall, I really like this book. It’s comprehensive and has already saved one of my fish. It’ll be in my library for a long while.

You still need a tablet or smartphone to get the full use from the paperback version of this book.
This review is for the paperback version of this book;I was disappointed in the lack of actual content. Although there is some good information, there are no photographs, illustrations, charts or graphs in the book that would greatly help supporting some topics. What the printed book relies on to provide the reader with more detailed information are over 160 QR bar-codes that you need to use a smartphone or tablet, equipped with an QR app, to scan each bar-code, and an internet connection to take you to those internet sites. This was a major annoyance for me!Why have this physical book if you still need to have a smartphone or tablet handy to visit all these additional referenced websites? You could simply avoid the book and do a simple internet search on your computer, tablet or smartphone for any specific topics to find the same information. Plus there is a good chance a simple internet search may even offer up the same websites the QR codes in the book direct you too. For me to try and read the book and also juggle a smartphone or tablet was a pain.Possibly the Kindle or eBook edition allows you to seamlessly maneuver between the book and the numerous QR bar-codes for addition information. But since I did not have the Kindle version I can only speculate on how it works. In closing; I cannot recommend the paperback version of this book.I would have preferred that the additional information on these referenced websites was actual in the physical paperback book.

Too much quackery, some of it very alarming.
This book has a lot of information but seems to represent the author’s experience rather than careful summarization of proven methods. There was likely very little peer review here. Mysterious “toxins” are listed as the root cause for several diseases and ailments, however details and specifics are missing. What are the toxins? How do we know? Can’t these be identified?I found a couple of statements very alarming that should have been removed by an editor. The first was that amygdalin “has cured thousands of people and animals of cancer”. This statement is not only false but also dangerous. Amygdalin breaks down into cyanide upon digestion and can be extremely dangerous. Suggesting this substance be used as a treatment for tumors (in fish or mammals) is ridiculous quackery. The second statement was a casual reference to fluoride as a carcinogen - this statement is also false and has no place in a book about goldfish care. Statements like these make the rest of the book’s content highly questionable.

Good content but still room for improvement
I purchased the paperback version, so this may read differently on the kindle version.I've been in the hobby for years now and am always looking for more information to educate myself to ensure a better quality of life for my fish, and therefore I am able to enjoy the hobby more myself. This book does have a lot of good information and if I was going to recommend just one source of information to a beginner, it would be this one. There are, however, things I would improve like the images/pictures used. They are very rudimentary and all in black in white. Actually, the entire book is in black and white. There are words that are more bolded than others but I think the method used makes it more difficult to find headings and information within the book. I think if colors were used, it would be easier to navigate through the book. This may sound trivial to some people but the color (or lack thereof) made it difficult for me to read and navigate the book. All subjects are throughout the whole book, not just in sections. Hopefully that made sense. For example, the book doesn't just have a section in the beginning about water quality, it discusses water quality throughout the whole book in many different sections. This makes sense when you've been in the hobby because all subjects are affected by each other but there isn't just one "place" that you can refer to about a specific topic. There are definitely name drops in this book. Most of the people mentioned are very reputable (Dandy Orandas is amazing) but there are also other people in the business that are wonderful as well that aren't mentioned (KingKoiGoldfish). Do your research. There are also many people who are terrible. There are also products mentioned by brand. My recommendation would be to do your research about these as well. There are many brands to choose from and some work better than others for different people.Overall, yes I recommend this book, but there is still definitely room for improvement and I recommend dealing with reputable people and products that are willing to back up their work (Seachem, for example, is excellent with customer service and information/help).

An Absolutely Brilliant Guide to the Care of Goldfish.
I came across this book when I was looking for help and advice when one of my goldfish had fallen seriously ill. The information and advice in this book saved my goldfish's life and not only just the content. The author Meredith Clawson offers online advice to buyers of her book and she has been unfailingly generous to me with her time and expertise. The fish that nearly died was left (how shall I put it) somewhat disabled by her brush with death so I sought Meredith's help again. There I was anxious and bewildered and extremely concerned about the well being of one of my aquatic chums and Meredith's email support was absolutely invaluable. I calmed down, got hold of the medication she recommended and my slightly disabled fish is now fine. There are people who keep tropical fish, there are people who keep Koi but if you keep goldfish you soon realise what remarkable, hardy, long lived creatures they are, who deserve the best attention you can give them. If you care about the welfare of your goldfish buy this book. I've got the e-book version and the actual hold it in your hands edition. If you know someone who has goldfish then do them and their fish a favour and buy them a copy too. Thank you Meredith Clawson.

If I could leave zero stars, I would
This book is practically useless. It has NO illustrations, other than QR codes, which I am sure are just click bait for the author to get a percentage of sales, as they all lead to (US) Amazon links. Misspellings abound, along with basic grammatical errors. This book tells you absolutely nothing that you cannot find on the author's website, PureGoldfish.com. I've been to the website before, which is decent enough content but completely unorganised, but the book is really hyped up there, leading people to believe that the book will contain much more content than the website. The book most certainly does not. If I wasn't in isolation during the coronavirus lockdown, I would return this. It's a complete waste of money.

A mine of useful information
You cannot read too many books about keeping Oranda (and related fancy goldfish). Every experienced aquarist who has kept these goldfish for years has something important to contribute to the necessary store of information that one requires to successfully keep Oranda goldfish. I will be referring to this book over and over again whenever one or other question arises to which this author provides an answer. I bought the book in kindle form - but might buy the paperback version as well to have at hand on my goldfish shelf.
