Great
I study with Dr. Brooks and this a great book. It's academic and not easy to read, but worth if you read diligently.

An excellent exposition of Sri Vidya
This is an excellent book on Srividya—the esoteric tradition of Sakta Tantrism of South India. Although the analysis and description takes on an academic rigor, those who make the effort to learn about the traditional will not be disappointed. Prof. Brooks has little nuggets about this most powerful of Sakta traditions that are illuminating as well as satisfying. I would have liked to see a more in-depth discussion of the panchadasi and sodasi mantras that are central to the Sri Vidya tradition.

Brooks has such an ego. What a waste of time to try to learn anything from his text. Better to sit in prayer and ask Devi for guidance than read Douglas Brooks.

Every Sri Vidya upasaka should own this book
This is an excellent scholastic overview of the entire Sri Vidya tradition of the south. What makes this book unique is that it takes an objective viewpoint, writing from the perspective of an anthropologist observing the tradition rather than that of a practitioner. Interestingly, this makes this book a fresh take on the tradition from the viewpoint of the practitioner. In general, books by Western scholars on Indian spiritual traditions are very valuable because they often make explicit the implicit aspects of the tradition in question, and also venture to say things that Indian practitioners might be hesitant to.This book is highly recommended to anyone who wants to commence a study the Sri Vidya tradition.
