A Concise History of Bulgaria (Cambridge Concise Histories)

A very good read. Clear and to the point, an excellent starting point for anyone who wants a quick over view as I did. Also, a must read for anyone who wants to understand the Bulgarian mentality if they decide to live here.

An excellent read, though there were some typos here and there.

A comprehensive and interesting history of Bulgaria, ideal for readers with no existing knowledge of the country. The author focuses mainly on the political history of the country, including the years as an Ottoman province, the rise of independance/nationalist movements, and the period under Communist government.

I am Bulgarian. I am very much on the fence with this book. It gives little detail on the history of the country before the World Wars. It focuses waaaaay too much in detail on the last couple of centuries. Moreover, it doesn’t have much detail on what was on the land before the Bulgarian tribes arrived in the 7th century. Basically, all the really interesting bits have been given in a very concise format and too much detail is put on the most boring part of the country’s history in my opinion.

A very interesting and informative introduction to the history of Bulgaria. This book offers an excellent round-up of Bulgarian history, giving an insight into the factors that have shaped Bulgarian culture and thinking throughout the ages.

It is not easy to write a concise history of a nation that is over 1300 years old but this account takes that time frame and boils it into an easy to follow account of the Bulgarians. One of the most important, yet unheralded, countries in Europe is dealt with in a manner that would make the Bulgarians proud of its history. Although embroiled in wars, external occupations and internal strife for much of its history; a rich and diverse cultural heritage has remained intact throughout Bulgaria. This history of Bulgaria should be read by any student of European history as it tends to unlock the rich vault of Eastern European history and its influence throughout the world.

R. J. Crampton has written what is probably the definitive history of Bulgaria for the English speaking reader, this is a good summary of that textbook. If you want a more detailed version he has it, but this is a great place to start and for many is all that you will need/want to know. I lived in Bulgaria for a few years and read this before I went, then I read it while I was living there and again once I had left. It is a great work.
