Does it works for a classical guitar? Nylon string guitars are wider than guitars with metal strings

It's pretty universal. The only one I think it would have trouble with is those narrow telecaster headstocks or, perhaps, the oddly thin ESP/LTD headstocks. Also, it won't work at all on headless guitars.

What exactly is the 'specially formulated foam rubber' material? I need to evaluate its suitability for this mounting position and climate.

It is just closed cell foam padding. It does the trick protecting the guitar neck

Whats the max weight it can handle? I have a solid body epiphone les Paul

I have a solid body Gibson Les Paul on this guitar stand and it works just fine. The stand should be fastened to a stud or a ledger board fastened to a stud. I would not hang the Epiphone on this stand or any stand if the fasteners were screwed into nothing but drywall.

Can the mounting plate be rotated so that the single hole is at the top? That would make it more stud-friendly from an engineering standpoint.

I don't believe you can place the single hole at the top. The left and right arms are in the down position, then close when they sense the weight of the guitars. The structure that the arms are located on cannot be turned 180 degrees to accommodate the single hole on top - it would take a home modification to enable the arms to function properly with the single hole on top.
