Waste of time and money
I can see how this product works in theory. But it practice it was largely ineffective. First of all, there is not enough material in the container to cover one fireplace, so I ended up putting it on thinner than I would have liked, making it impossible to remove. I then had to buy a second container to recoat the problem areas to remove the thinner material. After I was done with all of this, the end effect was that the fireplace looks about as dirty and sooty as it was before I started. So besides being difficult to remove, the product is not very effective. In the end I feel like I wasted $140 and hours of my time with no real benefit.

Works well but not a miracle cure
Product was easy to work with and I found other reviews helpful for advice. It is true you need it on THICK. However, it is definitely possible to have it too thick in the mortar where it doesn’t dry as much as needed-it was tricky to get off in some moister spots. The product made the fireplace much better, but as you can see from the photo there is still work to do. You can actually see the outlines of where I taped the product (most of the overall fireplace). I’m still happy because it dramatically reduced what I need to clean by scrubbing, but my results weren’t quite as good as advertised/as other people had.

These people stand behind their product!
This was a problem at first. My fireplace outer surface is under 40 square feet, so I purchased half a gallon of Paint and Peel. I spent couple of hours applying it brick by brick, not using the provided brush but another smaller one, so I could apply it over individual bricks and grout spaces thoroughly. I did 2 coats, at places even 3 and used all of the product. Apparently it just came not thick enough. Two days later, when the layer turned transparent and ready for peeling (picture 1) - I couldn’t peel it at all. It was too thin and resembled bubble gum smeared all over the wall, every attempt to remove it just caused it to tear instantly, no matter if I used fingers, nails, tweezers or scraper (picture 2).It looked hopeless, so I left a complaint here on Amazon. I was then immediately contacted by Shawn Wright from SaverSystems. We communicated via email, I explained the situation and sent him some pictures. He wrote back that he will mail me more product in order to apply it again in a thicker layer. The reassurance he gave me that the product will bond with its old layer was relieving because I was out of options for removing the dried thing and this meant there was actually a hope for a solution. Light in the tunnel. Few days later just as he promised I received a package in the mail containing three! (3) additional half gallon buckets of Paint and Peel. A $150+ value absolutely free. It took me another 3 and half hours to apply it, which I did just as meticulously as first time. I didn’t treat it like paint this time, I worked with it as with plaster instead. The new layer I put was as thick as it was possible to be without dripping down by gravity (pictures 3 & 4). 2 days later it was partially transparent, but the deep niches between bricks were still whitish, so I gave it additional 4 days to dry out completely. Thus, about a week after applying it a second time it looked ready for the crucial big peel step. I took me one evening from 9pm to about 1am but I was able to remove it ALL! What a relief!! What slowed me down was a strip around the fire door and another one under the wooden top which I had to scrape away inch by inch because it was still too thin (I simply shouldn’t have reached so deep into those places with the brush), other than that it peeled off mostly like in their video. I could pull it off the wall few bricks at a time using both hands. At the end I washed the bricks with a damp cloth just in case. The overall result is stunning – this product preserved the natural color of the bricks while refreshing them and the smoked dark spots are gone (pics 5 & 6). The fireplace now looks fresh, bright and new. Much better than if I had painted it with masonry paint. It took me about 10 hours of kneeling and squatting around this tiny fireplace mostly because I knew no better to apply it like plaster, not paint, however the end result will be rewarding for many years to come. Even if you avoid doing my mistakes you should still prepare for hard work. But I think it’s well worth it. My special thanks go to Shawn Wright from SaverSystem, you truly saved my project Shawn, I wouldn’t have dared to apply more product on my own, so if it wasn’t for your help this fireplace would’ve been a total mess. Thank you for not allowing this! Paint and Peel really works when used and applied right!
