DOOM Eternal is unapologetically gamey, and a well-crafted gameplay experience at that.
DOOM Eternal is not only an improvement over its 2016 counterpart, but one of the best single-player FPS games out there. It leans more heavily into its gameplay-focused experience than even its predecessor did, and while the more colourful visuals and bombastic nature might turn some people away, I have to applaud Id Software for making a focused, balanced, well-crafted game that puts gameplay first, in an industry with no shortage of soulless, joyless, slow, boring movie-like games that force you a shallow story pretending to be high art.The weapons are balanced in a way that ensures players will utilize everything at their disposal. Every weapon has its use for each given combat encounter, and the fast rate players will run out of ammo and be required to chainsaw-kill an enemy to replenish it creates a satisfying loop of attacking, evading and collecting resources. The designers took a hard look at DOOM 2016 and ensured players wouldn't be able to rely on one dominant strategy for all situations (like how the Super Shotgun could trivialise each fight before). That's not to say they didn't skimp out on the weapons, however. There are plenty to choose from, weapon mods make a return, there's now two different grenade types with different purposes, and the flamethrower known as Flame Belch that can harvest armour from any enemies set ablaze. The level design is solid, and if this is your first foray into the new DOOM series, then you may be taken aback by how much platforming there is, with the occasional light puzzle-solving thrown in to break up the pace of the gameplay. Much more preferable than forcing the player down linear, unskippable walking sections like most triple-A western games do nowadays. Plenty of collectibles to find, ranging from character action-figures, to vinyl records that let you play music from past Id Software titles, to Sentinel Batteries that unlock more goodies on the hub-area; The Fortress of DOOM. There are even 6 optional Slayer Gates, brutal combat gauntlets that, if survived and completed, award you keys that unlock a super-weapon. So not only do we have fun level design reminiscent of older 3D games like Metroid Prime, but even mechanics akin to character-action games like Devil May Cry and Bayonetta. The story is even more non-intrusive than the first game, getting right to the good stuff and not wasting your time by halting your progress and forcing you to listen to long-winded, quantitative, expository dialogue. While I would have liked a bit more build-up to certain story beats, there is once again plenty of lore to discover and read up on, for those who want to know the finer details. Other than that though, most returning players from DOOM 2016 won't have missed any details crucial to their enjoyment.Visuals are breath-taking. The game was made on the Id-tech 7 engine, which is an upgrade from DOOM 2016. Textures are more crisp and detailed, the lighting is as good as ever, and the game's framerate is still a stable 60fps even on base-consoles. I played it on a PS4 Pro, and I can't recall any moments during combat when the framerate dipped, which, considering how many demons you fight at once, and how much larger combat areas are than before, is a technical marvel. The game ditches its darker edge from DOOM 2016 for a more colourful artstyle. It's still got the grit, detail and gore you've come to expect in DOOM games, and plenty of areas just scream hellish and metal, but the more artistic approach ensures the game will stand the test of time far longer, while also paying homage to classic DOOM games. The audio design is spot-on. Each weapon has the right impact you'd expect from it (e.g. shotguns pack a powerful punch, plasma rifle has very sci-fi style blasting sounds etc), some hilarious popping sounds will play if you pluck certain demons' eyeballs out, and let's not forget the fitting soundtrack. Mick Gordon returns as the composer, and if you ask me, outdoes his work on the previous game. So many of these songs are hard to forget, and it's easy for me to associate them with the levels they were used in. Mick's influences from 90's game music really show in the soundtrack, which helps add to the whole experience of a brand-new shooter with as pure a focus on gameplay as a 90's game would have.If I had to level some criticisms though, the first would be towards the Marauder enemy type, and its implementation in every difficulty above the normal Hurt Me Plenty mode. I played the game on Ultra Violence, and for the most part, it was surprisingly fair. I felt like my deaths were my own mistakes, and that by overcoming each challenge, I was getting better at the game and playing it exactly how it was meant to be played. But the Marauder's AI is made in such a way that it completely disrupts the pace of the game, works against everything the game had been built around up until that moment, and makes for a frustrating, cheap and unfair challenge when other enemies are surrounding you. Facing him one-on-one isn't so bad, and I didn't mind the first battle with him as a mini-boss, but it was very disappointing that they threw him into more combat encounters throughout the game, and I dreaded every second of it. Considering how well-designed all the other demons are in the game, it's a shame that the Marauder is the exact opposite, and can actually hurt the enjoyment of the game whenever he appears. My second complaint is Battlemode. While it is enjoyable, more unique than DOOM 2016's multiplayer, and more in line with what you'd expect from a DOOM game, I didn't feel any need to keep playing it once I unlocked every trophy associated with it. There are only 6 maps as of this review, and 5 demons to play as. Gameplay just isn't as varied or exciting as the single-player campaign, or even DOOM 2016's multiplayer at its best, derivative though that may have been. I don't play a DOOM game for the multiplayer, and I'm glad Id lent into their strengths with the single-player campaign (with more DLC for it soon to follow), but if they were going to add a multiplayer bonus to the game, then they should have at least given it more depth and meaningful replay value beyond "fly for a minute as a Revenant" or "play as DOOM Slayer or a demon 50 times". It's by no means as big of an issue as the Marauder in the campaign is, but I still think it needs more work. And lastly, the game forced me to make a Bethesda account when all I wanted to do was play the single-player campaign of a game I paid £50 for. This needs to stop. I don't care if it's quick or easy to do, I shouldn't need to sign up for anything to play the single-player component of a game. I don't even care if I lose out on rewards, it shouldn't be mandatory. DOOM 2016 never forced me to do this, even during the multiplayer. We should all be holding Bethesda accountible for this one until they remove this restriction, because believe it or not, not everyone has internet access all the time, or even at all. To force this upon paying customers defeats the whole purpose of a single-player component.Overall, I'd say DOOM Eternal is both an ideal sequel to DOOM 2016, and living proof that a first-person shooter campaign doesn't need to follow realistic conventions or popular design trends to be successful. It just has to be fun, engaging, and challenging but fair. Despite the flaws I previously mentioned, I let the end credits roll feeling satisfied, and with the utmost respect for the people at Id Software for proving single-player fps games can still be worthy contenders for Game of the Year, without compromising on great gameplay.

After Practice This Game Is Amazing Fun.
UPDATED OPINION AT BOTTOM !!!I’ve only played a few levels, so this is more of a first impression. Before playing I read reviews and these were the main things mentioned. Low ammo, horrible platforming sections and high difficulty. I can confirm that your ammo is extremely low but your chainsaw recharges 1 bar over time and that’s enough to kill a small enemy and get ammo back but you have to do this a lot. There is a lot of platforming sections and some are pretty tough and possibly frustrating for some and it is much harder then doom 2016. I can only recommend this game if the above doesn’t bother you much and/or you are a massive FPS fan that generally loves most FPS. Even tho from what I’ve played, I much preferred doom2016 so far, (this may change) I’m still happy enough that I bought this game because I’m a big FPS fan and even tho I’m not yet a fan of some changes, I’m extremely happy that doom eternal is very different from doom2016. Why? Well it feels like I’m playing a new game and that’s what I want with a sequel. In today’s gaming, devs release follow up games and change nothing or very little, making it feel like your playing the same game. More devs need to do this to keep gaming fresh. Overal, I like my PS4 but I’m very unhappy that we still playing same old games with no or very little changes.Tomb raiderAssassins creedBatmanSpider-ManCall of dutyI really hope that ps5 delivers many fresh games with new ideas.Update - So, after spending a few hours playing, my opinion has changed for the better. I’ve got more comfortable with the changes, Dash, flame , meat hook, low ammo, higher difficulty and I’m absolutely loving doom eternal. The new abilities really change the game so much for the better. It’s much faster paced then doom 2016 . The platforming parts are actually quite fun, even if the odd part can get frustrating after dying 10+ times just trying to jump, dash and monkey bar, just to reach next part of the level. A small tip, if the jump seems impossible, it probably is and you must find the correct direct path. Make sure when doing platforming parts that you scan the area and look out for those walls that you can hang on to when jumping around. I think doom 2016 was bit scary and monster looked meaner and glory kills was bit more mature in doom2016, doom eternal glory kills look almost cartoon like and at first it bothered me but not for long. The main gameplay loop is so much fun that I honestly don’t care. Fun gameplay is more important then having darker levels and gorier kills. The fighting arenas are much bigger in eternal, which is great, because lots of the encounters in doom 2016 was in tiny rooms or hallways and you never feel like you have much freedom. If you love FPS games and doom in particular, you must play this game and when doing so, don’t let the changes put you off. Go in fully expecting to get annoyed right away by the lack of ammo. I imagine it would annoy most people at first but you need to understand that as you play the game you’ll realise that you can always get more ammo. Your chainsaw charges to 1 very quickly and all you have to do is chainsaw a small enemy and you get ammo back. A lot of fights constantly spawn enemy so you can always get ammo back. Also, as you play, you can acquire upgrade materials, just like previous doom and just like old doom, you can upgrade so you can hold more and more ammo. You have the flame attachment to set enemy on fire and this gives you Armor and glory kills give you health. Trust me, it will take a while but it will click and you’ll be in FPS heaven. I just really hope that we get meaty single player dlc. Destiny style raids would be incredible. This game is 5/5 for me. So glad I ignored all the negative reviews because they almost stopped me from buying.
