Voyager 1 and 2 to the outer solar system and beyond. How they did it and the obsticles they overcame.

Great book of interesting facts about Voyager 1 and 2. Things I didn't know about the details of how the Voyagers were built and the problems they encountered along the way. An amazing feat of engineering to send these probes to the outer reaches of the solar system and beam back to Earth such beautiful pickets and amazing facts. Reading it took me back to the days when Voyager was launched and when NASA released photos of Voyagers encounters along the way. Made me proud to be an American. Wish it had more of the beautiful pictures of the outer planets that the Voyagers were famous for, still, there were a few of them. The book has a whole chapter about the Gold Record attached to each Voyager and what was on it and the details about how to replay the information contained therein.

Interesting and Accessible

I became interested in the details of this spacecraft after putting together a model of Voyager 1, and this book definitely delivered. This whole series of books is excellent: well illustrated and written, with lots of insider knowledge and technical details. The information is provided in easily-digested "chunks", and is interestingly "deep" without being too technical. This particular edition has lots of interviews and anecdotes from the missions, covers the missions from conception through design, launch, and up to the present (as of publication date), and includes lots of technical diagrams. It really lived up to my expectations.

Great find

I gave this to my wife as a gift, who loves all things space and is also a tech person. Admittedly, I've flipped thru it myself, when she isn't reading it. Has great background history on the Voyager crafts and enough technical detail to keep you mind fed without sounding like a text book. Having this presented as a Haynes manual just makes this more fun.

NASA Voyager 1 & 2 Information

I expected a book with shallow text, with little information and lots of photo and I was pleasantly surprised with the consistent content without being extremely technical but also without being simple. The book is well organized and you have to be aware of the observations and appendices throughout the text.

Still can't figure out how to return knowledge to the Creator...

Haynes' "Workshop Manual" series has always been a little inconsistent, and this one is no different. This is the third book Christopher Riley has co-written for Haynes, and while it's better than the disappointing Apollo 11 manual, it's still not quite as good as the excellent Lunar Rover manual. This book follows the previously established Haynes format and fits in nicely with the other Real Space manuals they've published the last few years. As usual, this "manual" is divided fairly equally into technical, scientific, and historical sections. The first quarter provides some interesting background material on NASA's earlier unmanned deep space probes, the evolution of the "Grand Tour" flight plan, and the Voyagers' somewhat tortured development history. The next chunk, about 70 pages, provides a technical overview of the spacecraft and its systems, including each of the 11 science instruments, electrical power and communications, the Titan launch vehicles, and the computer and data storage systems. The next quarter is a technical and scientific look at both spacecraft's journey through the Solar System, focusing on some of the technical problems which had to be overcome, and some of the important discoveries from planetary fly-bys. The last section covers the Voyager Golden Records, including a description of how to play the record, and descriptions of each sound, photograph, music piece, and spoken message found on the records. Finally, there's a brief epilogue describing how both spacecraft continue to operate to this day. What's here is very nicely presented, but once again, I feel like Haynes has slightly dropped the ball on a potential masterpiece. The photographs and technical diagrams are generally of excellent quality and add greatly to the book's text. Unfortunately, for a faux "workshop manual," some of the technical material is a little dumbed down in places, and the writing is filled with somewhat grating colloquialisms. I know spaceflight and orbital mechanics can be painfully esoteric subjects, but the approach taken here rubbed me the wrong way a couple of times. The editing could have been a bit tighter in places; there are quite a few typos, and at one point, I found myself going back and forth trying to figure out if the propulsion module used a solid-fuel or hydrazine-fuel motor.I know I'm making this sound like a mediocre book. Except for a few minor issues, there's a lot of good stuff here. Still, I think Haynes needs to work on getting their editing team up to snuff. Not perfect, but still pretty enjoyable if you're interested in unmanned spaceflight.

so this is a great find for me

I worked on the Voyager project, so this is a great find for me. Anyone interested in Voyager will get a kick out of this. It doesn't really stay on the theme of being a repair manual, but rather goes into project history. Just the cover alone is worth it!

Great Voyager coverage!

Lots of diagrams and color pics for a complete overall history of 1970s US outer planet exploration vehicles.... an excellent overall job by Hayes, as always.

Boring

This book is not an insight into the technology. It's just a collection of commonly known facts and easily available pictures, not worth to buy it...
