Good yarn as always, but let me introduce you to a few proper Cockneys next time Robert.
Another good tale from the author of my favourite book of all time (Swan Song), but he misses the mark with a London accent of the time and all I can hear in my head when his Cockneys speak is an American twang. Londoners say ‘me’ not ‘my’ etc...

Sharks aside it was great
Much better than the last one, Robert McCammon returns to form in this rip roaring adventure set in a truly hellish London which is brilliantly evoked by the author. I rattled through it in 2 days. The only negative thing I have to say is that you really don't get schools of man eating sharks off the Welsh coast.

Good, but not as good as the previous 5 books
A good read but definitely lost something of the previous books. The second half of the book was a bit darker, duller, less exciting and enthralling.

Better than "The River of Souls", though not as good as "The Providence Rider"
"Freedom of the Mask" is part six in the series about problem solver Matthew Corbett, written by Robert McCammon. For a long time I thought these books were stand alone stories featuring the same main character. But while reading "The Providence Rider", book four in the series, I started to see a common thread. Book five, "The River of Souls", was very short compared to the others, an inbetween story if you will, until the ending causes commotion working as a catalyst for book six, "Freedom of the Mask". It becomes obvious early on that this book is the culmination of all the previous stories, all woven together into that single thread here. And the best thing is: the story isn't over yet!"Freedom of the Mask" is better than "The River of Souls", though not as good as "The Providence Rider". Nonetheless, it's still one of the better McCammon books. I can only say one thing: keep 'm coming!

What will become of Mathew?
This in my opinion is by far the best episode of this remarkable series. The present work shows the characters in a more nuanced light than ever before; giving Professor Fell, Hudson Greathouse and Berry Grigsby more prominent and interesting roles. The work also high lights how the present state can be, as T. S. Eliot's Archbishop observed, a blending of deeds both good and evil. Very well done! While it might be possible to read this book on it's own I do suggest that you read the entire series starting with "Nightbird". Not only is there is a great deal of nuance in the texts , they are just plain enjoyable reading.I grant that this episode ends in a substantial cliffhanger but this is not a problem as it stops at a point where there are many possible continuations (including none). I am certainly interested in how a book of sorcery ("Solomon's Lesser Key") will be woven into a story that has so far been grounded in the "actual" especially considering that many of the authors best works have dealt in what can only be termed the supernatural (keeping in mind Arthur C. Clarke's quip concerning "Sufficiently advanced technologies)But I hope that the present episode will neither be the final nor the penultimate episodes concerning the intriguing world of Matthew Corbett.

McCammon anf Corbett deliver again!
Been a fan since Matthew Corbett's first adventure several books ago. His latest takes him through a London so dark and dreary, where depravity and desolation hide in wait behind every shadow.Professor Fell makes his appearance in the flesh as do some of the others in his rogues gallery. It was frightful fun finding out a bit more of their backstories. Also, with the introduction of the aptly named new villain, Cardinal Black, the story starts descending into a more supernatural level of atmosphere. One which Robert R. McCammon is quite comfortable in. Much like an angler fish gliding through the darkest of the oceans depths.Looking forward to the next one!

Wordsmith . PERIOD.
Robert McCammon quite simply put is just about the best author alive writing. The Adventures( or Misadventures as Mr McCammon puts it)of Matthew Corbett astounds me more w/ every release.I wrote in my notes when reading #3 Providence Rider that he needed to " toughen Matthew up some".Jeez. After these last two...dunno If I have READ any character with such resolve & toughness .If there ever was a "stand up guy"-thats Corbett! McCammon has the damnedest knack to make u drop out of our reality and into 1703 NewYork, Charles Town, London.I SWEAR I can hear and smell the background noise as I'm reading along. Also LOVE! The continuity. Continually referring back to past cases without becoming a boring rehash.I fervently HOPE and Pray Mr McCammon writes 6 MORE of these. And Perhaps another Michael Gallatin adventure. To be sure...he writes it..IT entertains.Thank U kind sir for 30 yrs of thrilling edge of your seat nail- biters!

Great Crime Drama from one of the Best Writers of our time
Robert McCammon has totally enthralled me with his historical descriptions of the world as it was in the 18th century, all serving as a backdrop for the eternal conflict of Good vs. Evil. Matthew Corbett is the young "problem-solver" who has become entangled in an evil conspiracy that seeks to dominate both Old England as well as the New World. He finds himself fighting not only for his own life, but for the life of the precocious girl he loves, Berry Grigsby, and his honest friend and advisor Hudson Greathouse. A riveting plot from McGammon, in much the same style as his previous books in this series (this is number 5), incorporating deep despair, darkness and suffocating evil offset by sunny periods of exhilaration, hope and the eternal optimism of the human spirit. I always walk away from a McGammon book in awe of his exceptional writing style and his great story-telling ability, and humbled by the gift that he uses for the entertainment of his devoted readers, like me.

Mccammon at his best
I recommend this book to any Robert Mccammon fan and any reader with an interest for great story telling and character development. However, start from the first book. I do not want to tell much about the story but this novel really tested the characters will to live and do anything for each other. Mccammon has a gift of transportating the reading into his story. His research for his work goes unnoticed. I can't wait for the next chapter in Corbetts adventure. Keep it coming. Highly recommended.

Oh no!
I'm terribly sad to have finished this book. This is the last available, from Amazon, in the Matthew Corbett series. Rumor has it there is another, "The Nightbird Speaks: Part II", but I can't find it. The Robert McCammon website promises "Cardinal Black" sometime in 2018. I have thoroughly enjoyed the series. I will be missing Matthew and company. Please write faster Mr. McCammon!

Continuation of The Mathew Corbett Saga
I waited a long time to find out what happens to Mathew Corbett after he is was put on a ship bound for England and a reunion with the evil Dr. FellHe had amnesia and was unaware of the danger until a fight with the evil German Count brings everything all back. He kills his captor and is brought to England as a murderer. What happens next is a very entertaining story of medieval prisons and 1700's gangs in London. Mathew's predicament at the end of the book is a cliffhanger and I hope I don't have to wait forever to find out what happens. He forms an agreement with his arch enemy Dr. Fell to save his true love and defeat a greater evil than Dr. Fell.

Matthew Corbett is at it again!
Matthew Corbett's latest adventure. The action has moved from the colony of New York to London and Wales and as usual is intriguing and enjoyable. The description of gritty, old London makes you feel like you are there in the fog and it's a very dangerous place indeed. Corbett meets up and encounters familiar old foes in an effort to rescue best friends who had came to rescue him. Gave it only four stars because the conclusion didn't come to a satisfactory ending. But of course McCammon does this on purpose as he knows his fans want another novel in this superb series anyway!! Maybe the new and old villians will get theirs in the next one. Sure do hope so.

Just fascinating...
...how this "problem solving" series has actually turned into one long story arc. The main character, Matthew Corbett, has grown into a really interesting "leading man". The supporting cast is fascinating, though I was sorry to see his two best friends brought so low. Ans, who would've thought such a bad-guy as Fell could be topped by a worse guy.Now I'm anxiously awaiting the next installment.I've read recently that Mr. McCammon will be retiring in a few years. I feel as if I've gone from twenty-something to my own retirement with him, and he will be sorely missed. Thank you for all the finely wrought entertainment.
