Simply Color 1.0 Jet Black Permanent Hair Dye, Cream

If the people who make this color see this, please don't stop making it! This is the best color I've ever used. I am growing out a pixie cut. Having not seen my natural hair color in over 20 years, I decided to find out what it was. After I did that, I immediately went to the store and looked for something to color the nightmare that was my hair; a blend of salt & pepper and old orange. It was terrible. The first thing I noticed was the packaging. I appreciate that it's biodegradable and recyclable. Then I noticed the time you leave it in your hair is longer than 'regular' dyes, which to me means it's more delicate to your hair, and it was. I left it on for the recommended 30 and rinsed. My hair is very fine and delicate so I have to be careful with it. From the minute I took the towel off my head I knew I loved this color. At first, yes as I have seen in another review, the new growth is very vibrant! For me it was almost a deep violet color-which I loved. That same violet color attached itself to the gray in my hair and gave it really cool looking violet/auburn highlights, while coloring the rest of my hair a nice chocolate brown. I don't think it's too dark or too light. It's very gentle, which I appreciate. My head didn't burn once during the 30 minute wait. I can't say that about other box dyes. The smell wasn't bad at all. If you've ever used Clairol, you've lost your nose hairs a few times. This is NOTHING like that. It's very pleasant and when you rinse it off, your hair doesn't feel like straw until you put that conditioner on it. I rinsed mine out with tepid water and was very gentle with it before I conditioned it, but I still think the dye is very very gentle. This color is AWESOME and even my guy loves it. He even asked me to come to the patio door where he could look at it in the natural light and told me how cool the auburn violet streaks were. I'm very happy with this color and will keep using it as long as they keep making it. And hey, if the folks who make it read this, KEEP MAKING THE CHOCOLATE CHERRY! lol Update: my color was fading and I had a box sitting here so I decided to try it again. The only thing I missed the first time was that I was not supposed to shampoo my hair out after I rinse the dye. I typically use a cleansing conditioner not shampoo, but I was unaware I'm supposed to skip that step and go straight to the conditioner they include. No shampooing needed! In the second collage, the first picture is one month after using this dye for the first time. I tried to include a picture of it in the processing phase so you can see it doesn't get too red. I am pleased with the after shot even though it is a little darker on the ends, I expected that as they are fine and absorb color easily. It slowly fades over the course of the month but I am very pleased with this product because it is so gentle for my hair and I love the color.

This hair color exceeded my expectations. The formula was easy to mix and apply, even doing it myself at home, and the consistency wasn't runny or messy. The color came out rich and true to the box — no brassy or uneven tones — and it didn't feel drying or damaging to my hair afterward. It's held up well through multiple washes without fading too quickly. For the price, this rivals salon-quality results. Would definitely repurchase.

UPDATE: I've now ordered Schwarzkopf Simply Color Permanent Hair Color multiple times since December 2022, and after trying Medium Brown and Dark Chocolate I finally settled on Jet Black and it's just awesome. The other colors were fine, but just not as dark as they appeared in the pictures. However I'm an older male with extremely long and full, all gray, hair. So depending on your hair length and condition you'll have to experiment to find what works best for you. In any case I'm primarily updating this review because after six applications I've still never had any allergic reactions, and that sets this product heads and tails above all others I've tried over the decades. The only other additional comments I have is that, as others have noted, it's not quite "permanent" as it needs to be reapplied every 3 months or so, but this is still much longer than products like Just for Men. And finally, as the description notes, if you have longer than shoulder length hair you will indeed need two boxes. I was in a hurry once and tried getting away with one box, but with hair going almost all the way down my back, it wasn't enough and the color was much lighter. So my recommendation is to try it even if you don't have problems with allergic reactions. The color is much better, without the brassy/orange tint of products like Just For Men, and it lasts much longer. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Wow, I wasn't sure what to expect since every hair die I've used in my life has burned and/or itched like crazy. I learned long ago that it was a chemical called PPD that's in almost all dyes, but could never find anything else that worked. However this dye uses HPPS (Hydroxyethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulfate) which is similar to PPD, but doesn't cause allergic reactions in many PPD sensitive people. And wow, it worked incredibly well for me. There's been absolutely no itching or burning, and I waited 72 hours before writing a review just to be sure. And the color is great, and covered my grey as well as any other dye. I only wish I'd gotten a darker color, as the medium brown for this dye is lighter than the "Just For Men" I used to use. But it's a great shade, not brassy or orange at all. So next time I'll just get a darker brown. One final note, while the HPPS worked for me, unfortunately it won't work for everyone, and some people will be allergic to it is as well. But like I said, it causes far fewer allergic reactions than PPD, and is definitely worth a try!

I really liked this hair dye overall. It was easy to apply, covered well, and the color lasted a long time without fading quickly. My hair felt soft afterward, and I appreciated that it didn't have an overwhelming chemical smell. The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that the color turned out much darker than the picture on the box. I expected a medium brown shade, but the result was significantly deeper and darker than advertised. If you're choosing a shade, you may want to consider going a little lighter than what you think you need. That said, the quality of the dye was excellent and the color stayed vibrant for weeks. I would use this product again, but next time I would select a lighter shade.

LOVE THIS DYE!!! The color is great, but I would definitely suggest going a little lighter than you think you need if you have dark brown hair and want to dye it darker. I was a little too ambitious and it made my hair nearly black, but it was still super cute.

I like that it is healthier than a lot of the other home dyes out there. It is also at a very, very affordable price. The packaging is nice as it's eco friendly too. I will say that if you have long hair, you may need to get two if you are planning on doing full coverage. I only needed it for half my hair and I have long hair. It did not cover quite as much as I would have liked, so that was disappointing. But it did dye my hair black and in record time. The smell was okay. It has a smell of course but it is not as strong as ones I have used in the past. I have not used it on my scalp, so I can't say if it is irritating or not. This is a great brand though. I'm sure it is good for most skin types. 1/21/21 EDIT: Okay, so it has been almost 20 days and sadly what was once jet black HAS faded a few shades to dark brown. I do use a color safe shampoo that has like six ingredients and is free of a whole ton of things, so it is not the fact that I shower every day I'm sure. I've used permanent hair dyes before and they have all lasted at least three or four months at least before losing just a little bit of their vibrancy. This is the first time I have used so-called "permanent" dye and it has started fading significantly within the first month. I know there are semi-permanent dyes that are supposed to last approximately 27 or so washes, but this box was marked clearly as permanent and not marked as 27 day semi-permanent hair dye... so I am not sure why it is acting like that's the case. A bummer but oh well. I know that more natural products tend to have a hard time doing as "good" of a job unless they get it all just right, but I've always liked this brand, so it's disappointing that it did not work out so well for me. To give an idea, my original hair color is chestnut brown and it was virgin hair. To give any context to those curious.

I loved being a red head. Upkeep was a pain though. This color is GORGOUS! Highly recommend <3 Every color I've tried from Schwarzkopf worked beautifully.

so i’ve been using this hair dye for years, and i developed an allergy to ppd and when i first started using this, i had no reactions. this is always my go to for black hair dye. but in september of 2025 i noticed i had breakouts on my scalp, but it wasnt as bad as my usual allergic reactions to other hair dyes with ppd, so i just assumed it was irritation. ever since then ive had that happen when using it. well last night i did my hair as usual. within 30 mins of rinsing it out i went into severe anaphylaxis and had to be rushed to the emergency room. i’ve seen a couple of other reviews stating it appears that the formula was changed and ppd was now added and it must’ve happened around september of 2025. please be careful as most of you who use this probably use it for the same reason i did. very scary experience for me and i would hate for someone to experience what i did last night. read the ingredients list and do a test of it on your arm if you plan on still using it.

Very nice quality, didn’t leave my hair dried out. I ordered 2 but sadly two wasn’t enough for my hair so it gets expensive. I had to go order two more. One to finish the hair n one for roots later. The delivery time is too long as well but the product is great

Indeed a good solution for anyone suffering from itchy scalp post touch up.

I allergic to almost all hair colors. But this is so good as I am not having allergy when using.
