Schwarzkopf Simply Color Permanent Hair Dye, 5.0 Medium Brown, Long-Lasting with Nourishing Ingredients, No Ammonia or Silicone, All Hair Types

UPDATE: I've now ordered Schwarzkopf Simply Color Permanent Hair Color multiple times since December 2022, and after trying Medium Brown and Dark Chocolate I finally settled on Jet Black and it's just awesome. The other colors were fine, but just not as dark as they appeared in the pictures. However I'm an older male with extremely long and full, all gray, hair. So depending on your hair length and condition you'll have to experiment to find what works best for you. In any case I'm primarily updating this review because after six applications I've still never had any allergic reactions, and that sets this product heads and tails above all others I've tried over the decades. The only other additional comments I have is that, as others have noted, it's not quite "permanent" as it needs to be reapplied every 3 months or so, but this is still much longer than products like Just for Men. And finally, as the description notes, if you have longer than shoulder length hair you will indeed need two boxes. I was in a hurry once and tried getting away with one box, but with hair going almost all the way down my back, it wasn't enough and the color was much lighter. So my recommendation is to try it even if you don't have problems with allergic reactions. The color is much better, without the brassy/orange tint of products like Just For Men, and it lasts much longer. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Wow, I wasn't sure what to expect since every hair die I've used in my life has burned and/or itched like crazy. I learned long ago that it was a chemical called PPD that's in almost all dyes, but could never find anything else that worked. However this dye uses HPPS (Hydroxyethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulfate) which is similar to PPD, but doesn't cause allergic reactions in many PPD sensitive people. And wow, it worked incredibly well for me. There's been absolutely no itching or burning, and I waited 72 hours before writing a review just to be sure. And the color is great, and covered my grey as well as any other dye. I only wish I'd gotten a darker color, as the medium brown for this dye is lighter than the "Just For Men" I used to use. But it's a great shade, not brassy or orange at all. So next time I'll just get a darker brown. One final note, while the HPPS worked for me, unfortunately it won't work for everyone, and some people will be allergic to it is as well. But like I said, it causes far fewer allergic reactions than PPD, and is definitely worth a try!

Best hair color. This brand is amazing, I use it all the time. The color lasts long especially colors the gray hairs. I highly recommend this hair color. Will continue to buy this product.

It's a good box dye, I've used many different brands before, this has slightly less smell than Revlon, Garnier, and loreal. However I didn't like the conditioner as much, it's a bit watery compared to the other drug store brands. I got medium brown and left it for 30mins, what the instructions said. I'd say the color came out darker, more like black but not jet black. I wish it's a bit more brown, or even dark brown, but it's fine. If I buy this brand again, I'd pick a lighter color now that I know the actual color comes out darker.

This is great quality hair color for a very affordable price. I color my hair every 8-10 weeks and this color does not budge at all.

Never, ever, ever stop making this please! I have a severe allergic reaction to pretty much every hair dye out there. Even the type you shampoo in and quickly rinse out. My reaction is so severe, that my Dr. advised me to never dye my hair again. I decided to try this one and I have ZERO reaction. I can leave it on for the full development time and the color lasts forever (I only shampoo 1-2x per week.) I’m so so happy I found this. Please NEVER stop making it!

I have a sensitive scalp and a large percentage of gray hair in my dark hair. That's why I dye my hair every month. I need 100% gray hair coverage, but with a gentle formula. I've tried many different brands, and this hair dye is the only one that didn't cause any itching. The gentle formula is a big plus for me, and there's no unpleasant smell during the dyeing process. I also liked the hair conditioner that comes with the kit; my hair was very shiny after using it.

I was a loyal Schwarzkopf customer (until now) and when I saw this product (no ammonia) I thought it would be the same color without the damaging effects of ammonia. IT'S NOT THE SAME QUALITY or COLOR as the other Schwarzkopf hair color even though the number is the same. It's supposed to be Medium Brown and it colored my hair jet black. I'm genuinely shocked by the results! The developer was watery, which should've been my first clue. I've been wearing my hair in a ponytail (hiding it) while I wait the necessary amount of time before coloring it again. SO DISAPPOINTED. Never Again.

Initially leaves hair with body and bounce but after two weeks hair becomes straight with no body.

Very nice quality, didn’t leave my hair dried out. I ordered 2 but sadly two wasn’t enough for my hair so it gets expensive. I had to go order two more. One to finish the hair n one for roots later. The delivery time is too long as well but the product is great

I like it because of it's no ammonia etc but that also means it doesn't cover the grey enough or for a longer time than permanent. But you can't have it both ways, I guess. The length of time to keep it on is as long as the permanent dye so if you are looking for a no ammonia dye, then sure use it BUT it's super expensive compared to the Drugstore options.
