BelkinWireless-G Router DSL/Cable Gateway

I picked one of these up just this afternoon, and, within fifteen minutes (probably less than), I was on the Wii shop channel getting myself into trouble! I got myself a Wii a week ago, and wanted a quick and easy way to utilize all of its features, including its wireless 'Net surfing capabilities. I thought it was going to be SO much more involved than it turned out to be!In order to see just how much work it'd be, and how many pennies it'd cost me, I hauled myself down to my local Big blue and gold Tech toys store, where I found (and purchased) this same router for double the price (I've since ordered it from here). There was so much less involved in getting this going than I EVER would've expected: take it out of the box, disconnect the power and Ethernet cable from your existing modem, plug the Ethernet cable into an empty blue port on the back of this little number, take out the cable they package with the router, plug one end into the green port, and the other into the port from which you took the other Ethernet cable (the cable that had previously been connected to the back of your modem), plug the power back in to the modem, wait for it to reboot, plug in the DC power source to the router, and you're off and running! That's IT! And, at the price it's being offered for on Amazon, it's cheaper than getting the crud I'd have needed to make my Wii wired, AND I don't have to contribute to my existing rat's nest of computer and entertainment center wires! SSSOOOO easy, and SSSOOOO worth the pennies you'll find this for on Amazon! As for power, no, it's probably not the fastest and best wireless router out there, but at this price, it's great to start with, if you're trying to keep costs down!Also, what you've read about the CD packaged with this router is true: almost completely useless, outside of the PDF of the user's guide. I put the disc in (after being warned by the other reviews here), to find it as useless as I'd been warned it was. The PDF guide and links to the Belkin website (from which I set up my router's name and security features) were the only worthwhile things I found on that disc. So, yeah, the disc is pretty much worthless.I DID notice that Belkin no longer ships this unit with Protected Mode on, so that's an improvement (don't know if it relates to ChurchOfJesusChrist.Net's review or not, but...), and one less thing that you'll have to tweak. Overall, this is the best deal that I've found on a wireless router, and it's super easy to get up and running.Especially if you have a Wii and are WiFi deprived, go ahead and grab one of these! It's worth every penny if you're a frugal shopper like me! And, really, if you weren't looking for a great deal, would ya really be spending all of this time shopping Amazon.com?!? I think not!Get it! It's a bargain!

Looking back at old orders and realized that this product lasted 20 months. I bought in fall 2008 and came home one day and the router was dead. I had no problem installing it and had good range in my house backyard with the wireless. But one day I went to surf the net on my laptop and had not network. Found that the router would not power on properly. It would turn on with its usual flashing sequence and then shut off. No resetting or unplugging for a few minutes would help. Techie-oriented sibling has router of different company for 4 years. Ended up buying a new router from a different company. Three stars only because it worked well when it did work.

It's not exactly the cheapest out there but the router failed on me a couple of times. It has intermittent signal issues. At first I thought maybe it's the location so I moved it around.Then one day, I couldn't find it on the wireless network. Spoke to tech support and after 2 hrs, they decided to send a new one.Here's the thing. YOU, as the consumer, have to pay shipping cost for shipping back the defective unit. Tech support never mentioned a word about it. I got mad about it. Why am I responsible for paying to ship a defective product?After wasting much time with the customer service, they finally sent me a shipping label.Besides that this Belkin router lacks an information manual. It has a quick-start leaflet and that's about it. There are no information on how to change the internal settings using hard wiring and an IP address.Not buying Belkin ever again.

Pros :1.) It is small in size.2.) It efficiently handles multiple wireless connections with optimum speed.3.) Has a good range.4.) Nothing to be done to set it up. Just plug the wires in the correct place.If you dont want to configure the security part, you need to do nothing but plug the wires.5.) Customer Service which operates from India is excellent.6.) Comes with a lifetime warranty.(That guarantees the quality)7.) Amazon offers the cheapest price for this device.Cons:I dont see any.Detailed Review:I have been using Belkin products ranging from Wireless routers to Bluetooth dongles to Ipod Skins. And each time I must say that they are the best in quality and service.Well, you really dont need service in first place. but if you need, they are good with that too.I experienced this router at atleast 3 different places at my friends. We used to share wireless connection among 6-8 people and it was always outstanding.When I bought it from Amazon, I saw that the average rating is 3 for this router. I really dont know why this excellent product has been given low ratings by the users. Since I had personally witnessed the usage of this product, I took no time to order it when I needed to setup a wireless network at my parent's house. Since they aren't techno-savvy, it is the best for them.I downloaded a new version of Firmware from Belkin's site which started giving me some problems. When I called up the Customer Service and told them the symptoms, in no time they identified that the problem was due to the newly installed version . So, they asked me to install a newer version and since then everything is running like a charm.

It's small, it's compact, easy to set up, and fast as the dickens; but it also went down in less then 3 months. Just stopped working, total burn out. Can't even use it as a hardwired hub. Shame this unit replaced an older Belkin that worked for over 4 years, before retiring it; oops, it's back in service. Sent the new unit back to Belkin for repair or replacement. Fell into a black hole, no word, no unit, I'm sure if I ask the answer will be, it's lost in the mail. What a piece of junk, never will I buy another Belkin product. Going to D-link for it's replacement.
