Is there a way to get the pump to work? I tried unscrewing counterclockwise for 3 straight minutes but that didn't work.

Yes, they have specific directions for this. Tighten the top to the bottle as much as you can and then turn the pump spout counter clockwise. I usually have to hold the very bottom of the top with a washcloth to make sure it stays tight to the bottle while I turn the spout.
