This this ham radio better then the baofeng 5rplus

The Yaesu FT-60R is a better radio in almost all respects, from build quality to performance. If you can afford one hundred and fifty dollars on sale, then it would be my preference. However, the Boafeng BF-F8HP is a very good radio and can be bought for 1/5th the price new at an auction site. My primary HT radios are FT-60Rs but I have a few backup Baofengs too.

Could I use this unit to listen to FM broadcasting radio ?

Unfortunately, no. The Yaesu FT-60's VFO won't go low enough to go into the FM Broadcasting band. Broadcast FM is also Wideband FM for better audio quality (200kHz channel spacing) which is considerably wider than the standard 20-25kHz spacing of the Ham bands and the recently implemented 12.5kHz spacing of Business Band.

Does it have a scan mode?

Yes, you can scan by band (VFO scan) or frequencies you have programmed (memory scan). You can scan just preferred memories you have programmed and skip ones you wish to omit. You can scan weather channels. You can scan bands with frequency upper and lower limits. Unlike a dedicated scanner however you can't listen to trunked communications used by governments today.

Most models are made in Japan, as I believe this one is, excluding the battery. However, all of the Yaesu radio lineup is not. Some have a country origin of China. So the old saying buy Japanese is not the same as just buying a brand name anymore.
