This book and accompanying video provide a thorough introduction to flamenco guitar. What are the essential elements and techniques of flamenco guitar playing? How does one capture the real essence of authentic flamenco guitar? These are questions that Juan Martin, celebrated virtuoso flamenco guitarist and teacher, addresses in this first book of a projected three-volume series. The method is designed for the complete beginner and requires no prior knowledge of the guitar or flamenco music. It also provides invaluable insight and material for more advanced players who want to capture the essential sounds, rhythms and emotional power of true flamenco.The series begins with in-depth demonstrations of how the basic building blocks of flamenco guitar technique are used in actual flamenco music. The material then progresses to a detailed exploration of the individual rhythmic forms - the palos. In this book, the fundamental palos of Solea and Alegrias are presented to emphasize the basic rhythms and provide examples of falsetas - the melodic passages. Martin then shows how to apply these when collaborating with a dancer and singer. The music is transcribed in standard notation and tablature (cifra), and the two DVDs contain over 3.5 combined hours of explanation and demonstrations. The first DVD provides a detailed introduction to basic techniques, using examples of authentic flamenco to show these techniques in action. The second DVD progresses to demonstrations of the Solea and Alegrias, including music for the soloist and the guitar accompanying the dancing and singing. I started with a lot of music and guitar knowledge but a complete beginner on Flamenco. Takes a while to just count. Once you get the counting down the rest seems to start to fall into place. Juan is a fabulous teacher and obviously loves the music and shares that love above the technique. Although reading standard notation isn't necessary, it only takes about 20 minutes to learn and is helpful in explaining the theory behind the music but tabs are included or you could just do it by ear. . A must have for beginner and intermediate players.
I have been practicing flamenco guitar for almost two years on my own which had led me to pick up lots of bad habits. In the first 1/2 hr alone of the DVD I was able to correct many of those. His teaching style is very easy to follow. As long as you really put some time in you will take a lot from this. I wish I had purchased this a long time ago.

A good start, some experience beneficial
Book is easy to follow, but I imagine it may be a little more difficult for those with zero guitar experience. As another interviewer said, watch the DVD before digging into the lessons, as some technique lessons are buried between the song lesson chapters. Thankfully, the DVD and instructor are fun and engaging, so you won't be bored. Looking forward to finishing this and trying Vol 2.

Excellent Book for Learning Flamenco: Outstanding Instructor and the Best Book I've Found
Excellent Book for Learning Flamenco. Juan explains things very well and the book follows his (included) DVDs well. He is low key, polite, and gives you multiple angles of view (of his guitar and fingers) on the DVDs so you can really understand what's going on. Really like this book.

Good Content, Not New Condition
This volume is very good with regard to Flamenco guitar instruction. However, the book was clearly not in new condition as described. I will keep it anyway, but not happy about it and therefore only four stars. Otherwise it would be five stars.

Essential Flamenco Guitar
This product ( ESSENTIAL FLAMENCO GUITAR VOL. 1) is very clearly explanation, it is easy to follow including the content of the book and DVD ( 02 DVD is good quality). ESSENTIAL FLAMENCO GUITAR VOL. 2 I have received this morning is the same but the DVD is no good. The second DVD is damaged almost files inside. Because the DVD is very important for study... I hope to receive another replacement DVD. Thanks

I had the other set of books from Juan Martina and this provides a great compliment to the Solos series.

Absolument nécessaire à la pratique de la musique flamenco.....il y a plus de 3 gigas de vidéos à télécharger sur le site de l'éditeur qui sont aussi importantes à la pratique certaines leçons on plusieures vidéos dédiées..... ne parlant pas espagnol ce livre en anglais est parfait !!!!!

Really good Flamenco course - recommended
I had self-learned prior to following this book so wasn't a total beginner. The DVD video looks a little dated now but the content in the video and the book is fantastic. It's very easy to follow along, pausing where needed to practice. The segments are a favourable duration and not too long being focussed on one of two things a time. The structure of the video content is sometimes a little odd and inconsistent. The book is in tabs as well as sheet so anyone can pick this up and get going quickly. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to learn Flamenco coming from any level of skill with a guitar.
