A passion for the southwest
If you love the Southwest, this book, long out of print, is a wonderful addition to your library. I have since met and purchased a print that was only published in this book from David Hyde, the son of the photographer who now manages and sells his father's photographic estate. The commentaries range from the author's point of view, to Navajo chants, poetry, and other writers' excerpts pertinent to this desert land of extreme beauty.

Toward a Sense of Place
A book with photographs by Philip Hyde and essays by Stephen Jett, it is a treasure from the Sierra Club book series of the 1960s. What often goes unnoticed is an essay by Philip Hyde "Toward a Sense of Place" which offers some insight into why Hyde wandered the West in search of these special places and his musings about whatever collective memory some of these places have from prior times. It is a fitting piece of writing, spare but clear and true, to pair with Wallace Stegner's piece "The Sense of Place" (1992) which provides a slightly more elegant accounting. Stegner says "No place is a place until things that have happened in it are remembered in history, ballads, yarns, legends, or monuments." Hyde's account and the images he presented are of the same cloth from his journeys into the West decades before, personal expressions of what he found and done in a way that we can enjoy them time after time. A gem.
