Science and Development of Muscle Hypertrophy, Second Edition, is the most comprehensive resource on muscle hypertrophy in the world. Written by Brad Schoenfeld, PhD, an internationally renowned expert on muscle hypertrophy, this book is the definitive resource for strength and conditioning professionals, personal trainers, sport scientists, researchers, and exercise science instructors who are seeking information regarding muscle hypertrophy, including the mechanism of its development, how the body structurally and hormonally changes when exposed to stress, ways to most effectively design training programs, and nutritional guidelines for eliciting hypertrophic changes. This new edition offers more than 1,000 references and applied guidelines. Two all-new chapters deliver practical content on the measurement of muscle hypertrophy and advanced training practices. Readers will learn various methods by which hypertrophy is measured, including site-specific measures (circumference measures, MRI, CT, and ultrasound), indirect measures (underwater weighing, DXA, BIA, ADP, and skinfolds), and histological measures (biopsy), as well as the strengths and limitations of each modality. The new edition also provides guidance for achieving greater training volumes with training practices that maximize the individual’s genetic potential to gain muscle. No other resource offers a comparable amount of content solely focused on the science of muscle hypertrophy and its application to designing training programs. The full-color book offers several features to make the content accessible to readers: Research Findings sidebars highlight the aspects of muscle hypertrophy currently being examined to encourage readers to re-evaluate their knowledge and ensure their training practices are up to date. Practical Applications sidebars outline how to apply the research conclusions for maximal hypertrophic development. Comprehensive subject and author indexes optimize the book’s use as a reference tool. Although muscle hypertrophy can be attained through a range of training programs, this book allows readers to understand and apply the specific responses and mechanisms that promote optimal muscle hypertrophy. It explores how genetic background, age, sex, and other factors have been shown to mediate the hypertrophic response to exercise, affecting both the rate and the total gain in lean muscle mass. Sample programs show how to design a three- or four-day-per-week undulating periodized program and a modified linear periodized program for maximizing muscular development. Science and Development of Muscle Hypertrophy is an invaluable resource for those seeking to maximize hypertrophic gains for themselves or their athletes or clients and for those searching for the most comprehensive and authoritative research in the field. It may be purchased separately or as part of a package that includes all the course materials and exam. Review: Greatfully recommended by an desertcart reviewer - This is a great book. If you want to know the science of Muscle Hypertrophy, this book and Designing Resistance Training Programs by Steven J. Fleck and William J. Kraemer (also recommended by Scott). buy both books. I also think the practical programming book is a great resource I've re-read and tried to completely learn. Review: Must have for nerds - Very high level of science and detail in this book

A must read for all bodybuilding people!
Brad is my favorite Muscle scientist and his research serves a well needed source for 'when you want to continue building your body beyond the dogma and when everything is broken but still want to chase muscle gains'. I am that person! I am utmost grateful for this bible of muscle and I recommend it to all deep thinkers in the muscle department. Now, we just gotta work it.....! This should serve as an essential mandatory read for all the ones who say 'you can't build muscle' for whatever reason, before you decide that is the reality, let us see, do you actually TRAIN to GAIN or just 'thinking about it'...! THANK YOU BRAD! PHOTO left: 2 years into my natural bodybuilding career, was dieted down from fattest overweight 5'2 144 to 130. right 2020 or 2021. I've been hitting it for a quarter century by now so YEAH not a '3 months transformation'. ;-)

The book arrived in damaged condition, but replaced in the very next day.
A very interesting and expensive book that was shipped smeared with some type of sticky substance. Unfortunately, I have to return it. 5 stars for book, but zero for storage and handling. UPDATES: The replacement book arrived next day in perfect condition. This is one of the most comprehensive book on muscle hypertrophy. Highly recommended!

Most up-to -date textbook in Hipertrophy!
As english is my second language it took me a lot of time to finish this book. I am 100 % sure that this book is an academic textbook, or it should be. Some chapter are easier too read which comes like a fresh air during reading it. He uses tempos in a different manner so be cautious when you read that part. All in all its a higly massive book which contains interesting facts about hypertrophy and also helpes me to decide which factors are less vital and which are more important in this field.

Essential reading for anyone interested in fitness, exercise science, human physiology, etc.
The amount of work put into this book is unbelievable, but it’s no surprise, as it’s written by the world’s leader in muscle hypertrophy research. That being said, Dr. Schoenfeld is able to carefully explain each complex process and detail related to the muscle building phenomenon without missing a detail, while still writing in a manner entertaining and mild enough for many casual readers to at least grasp the main points of what he’s aiming to get across. This is no ordinary “textbook.” It’s truly a masterclass in artfully detailing the full history and most recent findings in the field of muscle hypertrophy research.

one gigantic meta analysis, for drawing conclusions yourself
This book is really for the fitness pro who wants to dive into studies and draw conclusions for themselves. Outside study set up and physiology of building muscle which is not how to train to build muscle. I consider this book one gigantic meta analysis, It’s nice to see studies compared but he draws very few conclusions if any. The fact that he links the study for you to see is nice if you want to look more in depth of how the study was conducted and want to dive more into it. He loses credibility to me because he writes his tempos in a different style. After that point I had a hard time reading the book. Other books I’ve read give this author credit for being a good researcher but they all write their tempos eccentric, isometric, concentric plus an optional isometric. He writes his based one first part of the exercise movement, which is very annoying when you’ve been in this field and are used to the standard method of writing. Books written by Carl Dietz, Ben Peterson, Eric Cressey, Mike Boyle, Pat Davidson and others I find more useful. Given they are performance based and not pure hyper trophy. They talk about training theories, regimens and other external factors needed to improve. Not just comparing groups results to different styles of training leaving you with very few firm answers.

Filled with important, scientific evidence to enhance further understanding of Muscle Hyperthrophy
This Book was a very interesting read for myself and was a massive help to me throughout my studies. I recently graduated from a BSc Undergraduate degree in Sport, Exercise and Nutrition. This book definitely helped to boost my knowledge and understanding throughout my course and helped me to achieve a First Class Hons degree. Especially the exercise physiology modules, would definitely recommend purchasing this book to other students who study the same or a similar course. The level of evidence and research studies mentioned throughout the book was outstanding! Very clear and concise the whole way through. Excellent publish by the author !

Great, solid book
Really enjoying this book. I've followed the author for years and respect him. I am a trainer and have been for a long time. I find this book easy to read and has a great amount of useful information. I've seen some reviews that say its a bit scientific and then others saying its nothing new...I don't agree with either. He explains well, backs everything up and its easy to research further if I wish to. As to nothing new...its uptodate and explains itself...so really....a great solid book and a welcome edition to my book shelf.

Every fitness enthusiast should read this book!
Brad wrote the book (second edition) which should be read by any fitness enthusiast. As in 2016, in 2020, the book opens the door to the basic aspects of muscle hypertrophy with reference to the latest research. It is written in such way that anybody can profit from provided informations. Mainly, I love parts with a practical application of (read) theoretical knowledge, which perfectly completes the whole story. Thank you Brad for a such great book and work in fitness field.
