Grand new world
The Old One who is the ancient enemy of the lupi is driving her agents even harder to achieve their goals. Demons are involved, and the mystical bond between Rule and Lily is being tested in new and difficult ways. That bond is still fairly new, so Lily, Rule, and the audience get to discover its nature all together.I actually liked the arguments between Lily and Rule. They didn’t feel in any way like the characters were being unreasonable; they argued about entirely understandable things (in particular butting heads over independence and secrets). They are, after all, two extremely different people who were thrown together by the Lady the lupi serve. Not every goddess-created mate bond works out, after all, although at least she seems to pick people who stand a good chance of falling in love. That aspect of outside interference is what makes their bond different and, IMO, better than, the standard one-true-mate plots in many other books. There’s still an aspect of self-determination here, which I find much more palatable than most other such constructs.Lily and Rule are great characters, as are all the secondaries. Cullen is a sorcerer who moonlights as an exotic dancer, which is great fun. We also get to meet more of Lily’s new co-workers and her boss, and we see more of her family. I’m enjoying the slowly expanding sphere of attention that gradually brings more and more of the world into play. There are some fascinating events later in the book, but I’ll just say that I thought it ended with a very satisfying bang. Now I have to hunt down the next two books in the series!

Solid Urban Fantasy Series
If you're looking for a paranormal romance, Eileen Wilks' World of the Lupi series may not be quite your cup of tea. While there are romantic elements in the book - more in Mortal Danger than in Tempting Danger, the series opener - those elements are not the driving plot of the book. If you like your books more along the lines of urban fantasy, than give Wilks a try. You won't be disappointed.Lily Yu is no longer a homicide cop, but her life and her job as an agent for the FBI's Magical Crime Division certainly hasn't gotten any easier. Assaulted at her sister's wedding, trying to come to terms with her Were mate, Rule Turner, the prince of wolves himself, and still trying to find the ever-elusive Reverend Harlowe...and more importantly the big staff of necrotizing badness introduced in the series premiere Tempting Danger, she hardly has the energy to deal with the bodies that start piling up. Or the note left one one: This one's for Yu. Deal she must, however, and with the gritty determination and force of personality that is inherently Yu. She can't help it though, when events in her life put her positively beside herself.I really enjoyed Mortal Danger. It lacked most of the pleasing police procedural of Tempting Danger, but it did introduce more of the fantasy side of the world that Wilks is creating. It's a well drawn and complex world, and I like seeing it unfold a little at a time. I also very much enjoyed the both the reacquaintance with established characters - I'm a huge Cullen fan - and the introduction of new ones. Cynna Weaver is an enigma and a treat. It wasn't quite as much a self-contained thriller as Tempting Danger, and it's certainly not anything I'd consider stand-alone, but it was a definite bridge for the series and a significant step in world building. The only minor complaint I have is that the plot was sort of split between worlds and the more urban parts were dealt with disappointingly quickly. The fantasy parts, however, were well written and interesting, and I very much enjoyed seeing more of the were clan dynamics and politics in action. There's a lot of depth and a sense of history in this series that totally appeals, so it balances everything out nicely.I'm not entirely sure where the series is going yet in its overall arc, but I'm enjoying the hell out of getting there. Nicely done.

Necessary sequel but over-all disappointing
I suppose that this book was necessary in order to move the series along. Whereas the opening volume, "Tempting Danger," was full of fast moving action packed plot movement, this book seems to focus more on World Building. I find that most authors of series involving an alternate reality can just work the World Building into the unfolding of the early series. Here, Ms Wilks sacrifices good plotting for detailed World Building. While there is some movement in the developing relationship between Lily Yu and Rule, her werewolf partner for life, it is not all that rewarding for the reader as they are apart for more than half of the book. The book is important to the series, but I feel it could have accomplished with better plotting and more action. Recommended as necessary to the series, but keep expectations low as the plot is not that compelling.

Good 2nd Book - Looking Forward to 3rd
This was a good second book. I didn't like it as much as I liked the first in the series, but it was still good. There were some parts when they were in Dis that frankly, to me, weren't all that interesting. And I have to say that the character of Gan, while good for some laughs, just didn't really do anything for me. I mostly just wanted to skip those parts. I made myself read all of it, though, and ultimately liked the book. I do hope that books 3 and 4 (which I've already ordered) are a little faster-paced and more interesting than this one.The characters of this series are interesting. Rule, of course is interesting, but I really want to learn more about Cullen and Benedict - hopefully there will be more about them in future books.

Coming To Terms With Their Bond
This book follows almost directly on from the first book in the series. Lily is recovering from a bullet wound, but still has to attend her sister’s wedding as a bridesmaid, even whilst wearing a sling. They are still missing the staff that Helen used to create such mayhem, and Patrick Harlowe, a charismatic leader of a strange cult, is very likely to have it. The power the staff holds is enormous and they desperately need to find it, in order to contain it and destroy it, no matter the government seems to want to hang on to it.Then at the wedding Lily is attacked and no one seems to know who did it and why, only that she feels a sense of magic on her bullet wound. With no way of knowing what happened and why, they can’t defend her against anything that comes. This is actually a very clever plot line that helps Lily and Rule come to terms with their relationship, which was determined by The Lady (the Lupi’s goddess). When your choices are taken away from you, it’s much harder to accept those choices that were made on your behalf, even if in the end they work out ok. Rule and Lily like each other and have the magic fuelled passion, but they don’t love each other and they are tied together for the rest of their lives. This book helps them to handle this truth. There are some sweet and poignant moments in this book. I really enjoyed it.

Really didn't like this book.
I stopped reading this book half way through but forced myself to read it all, just in case it improved. I didn't.Rule is a boring lead character. Cullen is just lifted from the Charlaine Harris stories ie. he's a supernatural stripper. The men in these books are gorgeous bimbos or ordinary and unnoticeable. It's a pity as the storylines are clever and the writing is good (generally) but there are much better books than these, anything by Patricia Briggs for instance.

a sequel, good story-telling, interesting world
this follows 'Tempting Danger' (world of the Lupi) (a Lupus is a werewolf!). It carries the story on interestingly, though for me it lost the plot a wee bit, 3/4 of the way through... but it regained direction before the end . There are interesting characters, fairly good plotting, a pleasant 3 or 4 hours of escapism (which I like).
