Good as a history of photography, not a lot on aesthetic theory
The parts of this book that deal with the technical processes of photography - making prints, the earliest color photos, etc - are highly detailed and probably really interesting if you develop your own negatives. The earliest writings are fun, recounting Stieglitz' youthful trips around Europe and his enthusiasm for taking pictures. Later on, it gets bogged down in "Who's allowed in my clubhouse" type articles, which are not fascinating unless you're a huge Stieglitz fan. For example, I wish he would have written about why he abandoned his early Pictorialism so I could get a better understanding of what Stieglitz believed a good photo to be. But his prose is fun, opinionated, and easy reading. The book itself is printed on heavy, glossy paper. That works well for the photos, and surely keeps the book in good shape for years if one wants to re-read it. It's a little weird for the prose, which is most of the book, but it does present the photos themselves well.

... you're interested in the history of photography this is pretty much one of the better reads
If you're interested in the history of photography this is pretty much one of the better reads. It gives you Stieglitz full-on in his own writings, lets you see how his thinking evolves and what he was actually valuing / promoting in his art and the art of others. He is sometimes infuriating but always interesting. Kind of a slog to get through but well worth it when you're done.

very happy
good price, good condition, wonderful window into the historic events in the early 20th century, from the point of view of a major participant.
