5 out of 5 snowy, heartfelt stars
Christmas in the Country by Cynthia Rylant, illustrated by Diane Goode, is a heartwarming, timeless treasure that captures the gentle magic of a simple, old-fashioned Christmas in the countrysideโitโs the kind of picture book that feels like wrapping yourself in a warm quilt by the fire on a snowy evening! This beloved story follows a young girl living with her grandparents in a cozy white house, where every detail of the holiday season unfolds with quiet joy and deep meaning. From bringing home a tree thatโs just a little too big (squeezing it into the living room with love), to unpacking boxes of mismatched, homemade ornaments that each hold a lifetime of memories, to stringing popcorn and cranberries, baking cookies, sipping cocoa, and gathering with family for church and feastsโRylant paints a portrait of Christmas thatโs rich in tradition, family love, and the beauty of small, cherished moments. The narrative flows like a gentle snowfall: soft, evocative, and full of nostalgia without ever feeling sentimental or overdone. Diane Goodeโs illustrations are pure perfectionโcheerful watercolor scenes bursting with warmth, detailed yet whimsical, showing snow-dusted landscapes, glowing windows, a coal stove drying wet boots and gloves, barking dogs amid the holiday bustle, and a tree twinkling with those treasured, imperfect ornaments. The artwork perfectly complements Rylantโs Appalachian-rooted storytelling, evoking the same heartfelt simplicity found in their earlier collaboration, When I Was Young in the Mountains (a Caldecott Honor book). Itโs cozy, inviting, and utterly enchantingโreaders of all ages will find themselves lingering on every page, soaking in the details. This book is ideal for reading aloud during Advent or the days leading up to Christmas: it slows everything down, reminding us (and our little ones) what truly mattersโthe love of family, the comfort of home, and the quiet wonder of the season. Families rave about it becoming a yearly tradition, with many saying it brings tears of happy nostalgia and helps ease the post-holiday blues by celebrating the beauty in both the buildup and the letting go of the decorations. If youโre looking for a childrenโs picture book (perfect for ages 3-8) that feels authentic, soothing, and deeply meaningfulโfar from flashy commercial holiday talesโthis is it. Christmas in the Country doesnโt just tell a story; it wraps you in the spirit of the season and leaves you with a fuller heart.

Decent Quality, Book Smaller than I Expected
Although the pages were nicely illustrated and words were of a good font size, expected the book size to be bigger. Also, the story feels rushed in places and doesn't flow smoothly. Probably had to fit the 24 page limit as all the books in this series are 24 pages.
