To make it less aggressive, drill a pilot hole first
This Irwin bit is aggressive because of the spiral tip that sucks the bit into the wood. That's not always a good thing, because drilling fast near the edge can crack the wood, and the exit hole doesn't look clean. The Irwin Speedbor and Bosch Daredevil bits are even more aggressive. I was tempted to go back to my spade bit, which is slow but controllable.I found a trick to make the Irwin bit less aggressive -- by drilling a pilot hole first. That way the spiral tip doesn't have any wood to grab onto and doesn't pull the bit in. I can then control how fast to drill by apply pressure myself. The size of the pilot hole is as large as the largest part of the spiral bit.To make a clean exit hole, I stop drilling about 1 inch before the end. Then I drilled back from the other side, using the pilot hole as the insertion point. With the pilot hole, the 3/4" bit even works with my battery powered drill (3/8" chuck), although it stalls often and the battery is nearly drained after drilling a single 8" hole. For those of you who don't have a 1/2" drill, this is method might work if you only need a hole or two.

Did not stay sharp
This cut through like butter for the first 7 or 8 studs, then it went dull and had to force it through for the rest. Seems like it went dull pretty quickly.

I needed to drill holes in a fairly large tree stump, and using this Auger Drill Bit with my Dewalt power drill got the 1/2 of my job done quickly and easily. It really wasn't long or strong enough to get more than 6 inches deep into the stump, I had also purchased DEWALT DW1614 1/2" x 12" Black Oxide Drill Bit which as a secondary tool, allowed me to get 10-12 inches into the stump, which was perfect for the stump remover granules to get loaded in.When attempting to use the Dewalt black oxide drill bit as the initial tool to put a hole in the tree, it was very difficult, and at the same time, it was very difficult to use the Irwin Auger Drill Bit to go deeper into the stump.

A Great Drill Bit when you Need It - I highly recommend Irwin Drill Bits
I like Irwin drill bits and that is what I purchase when I need a different size or a replacement for worn bits.Irwin drill bits are very well made and last a Long Time. I have used this bit for drilling in wood, metal, and plastic as well as an auger when I needed to put a stake in the ground. You need to use a pickaxe in our yard as the ground is so hard.

Cuts fast and easy.
I was given 40 6”x6”x48” green treated timbers for steps down a hill. Needed to drill a couple 3/8” holes to put rebar through each of them. This auger bit cuts through them easily and cleanly with my DeWalt battery powered drill right on site so I didn’t need to haul them all to my garage. Outstanding’

Longest lasting drillbit
These are the only drill bit to use if you want perfections every time !!! My husband has been building wagons, chicken coops, carts, storage sheds for over 50yrs. out of different woods. Every other brand of drill bit he has tried or had to use when he couldn't get Irwin. has either bent or not lasted very long. He swears by the Irwin brand for all his drilling needs.

The bit I got is not balanced/centered properly, meaning when it is in the drill and turning, the screw tip orbits around the center axis instead of staying in the center. I have this problem in two different drills. If you are timber framing and trying to cut a plumb hole, I find this makes it more difficult.
