Introduction to Spanish Translation

i love the style of the author. His presentation of the topics was organized, patterned, and transitional. In every chapter, he'd start with an interesting history on translation; follow with a translation tidbit; then theory; then application; and end with a list of proverbs, idiomatic expressions, and false cognates. As the reader advances through the book, chapters get gradually more difficult. Five stars for the author.The book is not comprehensive and exhaustive. This is not a complete and ultimate source material, thus, the title: Introduction to Spanish Translation. Throughout the book, the author would name other book titles, such as the 1001 Pitfalls in Spanish, as his sources, and would suggest to the reader to procure such books if s/he wanted a more comprehensive discussion on the topic. Also, This book does not have an answer key. Sadly, the author, who had expressed his willingness to provide it through email, already passed away. (May he rest in peace.) Three stars for the contents.The publisher was contacted about this weeks ago, and to this day, no reply has been received although there is a blanket promise from them that they typically reply within 24-48 hours. If they do not have an answer key, that's understandable. They should have replied with a simple and honest apology/explanation. One star for the publisher and its mother company.

I really enjoyed this book. It's broken up into 24 chapters, each of which discuss theory, history, problems and techniques, and cognates/proverbs/idioms. Then each chapter has corresponding exercises at the back of the book. I would have given it 5 stars if an answer key had been included. If you purchase the book you will notice that the author includes his email and an invitation to write him if you would like an answer key. Unfortunately Jack Child passed away and his email no longer functions. I emailed the publisher and never received a response.

It has very interesting history tidbits and very helpful tips. Each chapter also includes a list of idioms and their translations.

I enjoyed this book, it is suitable for anyone who with college-level Spanish or above. The book contains history, theory, examples of funny mistakes, false cognates, and idioms in each chapter. This is definitely an old book, which makes some of the idioms and specific examples rather dated (reference is made to the Soviet Union in the present tense), but aside from that the book is excellent.

This book is required for a course I recently took. I was happy to find it available for the Kindle (it saves me bookshelf space). I found the information very useful and it does clarify some of the problems with translation..

Just about the only game in town if you’re teaching Span-Eng translation.

This book is a great introduction to translation and a very interesting read, surprisingly. However, there are a tonne of typos. I cannot understand why these have not been flagged as it is not the cheapest book. For content this book deserves 5 stars but the publishers need to recall and revise it to get rid of the errors.
