There is an upper and lower drain port, which one can I attach the hose to permanently to allow continuous draining of water accumulated? Why 2 drains

It may be for convenience. I'm not sure. But I do know this now. After waking up to my floor soaked I found that it's water retention is caused by the condenser as well & has to be drained. I had asked if I don't use the dehumidifier do I drain it. I didn't consider the condenser & the fact mine pretty much has run 24/7 since I got it.

Can someone explain the set-up as it pertains to the hose…does it require access to a specific type of window? Can you use it without the hose set up?

It will fit in any window either vertically or horizontal but the hose has to exhaust the air! There is no way it will work to condition the air if it does not exhasut it. If it is used as a dehumidifier, then water that is removed has to go somewhere too so, there is a tray that allows it to be used that way as well

Can you put screen on your air duct so no leaves or animals go on the unit? Would doing this affect the performance?

Mine is up against the existing window screen and creates no problems.
