They Couldn't Make it Today!!
Thankyou Warner Archive for another splendid "oldie" in wonderful Cinemascope, with lovely colour and sound (No Extras), and at a perfectly reasonable price. David Butler directs this "Cavalry V Indians" epic as if he had been doing Westerns all his career (he hadn't). Great sweeping vistas of Cavalry, wagon train, and Indians attacking everyone. Guy Madison is the Cavalry doctor who finds himself in command of the troop when the Captain (an unbilled Greg Barton) is killed. With the helpof gruff, tuff, Sgt James Whitmore, and the growing love of lovely Joan Weldon (never used enough in my opinion - a very talented, beautiful actress all too often in "B" pictures), he pulls it all together and saves the civilian wagon train (which may have smallpox victims), and most of the cavalry and Infantry men. A small Obsessive fan point here - Early on we see (again unbilled)- Denver Pyle and Jim Bannon as 2 redneck infantrymen who yell rude remarks, then are never seen again. What a waste. Also in good support is Ray Teal and Boyd "Red" Morgan (unbilled). Of course you couldn't make such a film today, and if somebody did you know it wouldn't/couldn't work. But...this 1954 film does work, and it's very enjoyable. Western fans must get it. Highly recomended.

One of the great Westerns of the 1950s
Fantastic. \Warner Bros first Cinemascope Movie. This is a real corker. Indians , Damsel in distress, Moaning troopers. Horses and indians flying about in all directions. This is a well made with wonderful photography all round excellent cast . James Whitmore as grumpy sargeant is great. This is one that you can watch over and over again .And thank goodness its not full of Political Correct Rubbish. The only good injun is a dead injun. They dont make em like this anymore. Mores the pity.Buy it buy it buy it.

good western
I saw it years ago and I liked it, and I still do, it is a good western, the characters are well drawn and the story is full of suspense even if we know that "the good guys" will win.
