I was not expecting this phrase book to be so thorough. There are phrases for so many different topics and situations. Many of the phrases are useful but there are phrases in there that you will probably never use. However if you are studying Russian then the point of this is for you to be eble to figure out the way the phrase is constructed so that you can start creating your own and not just relying on set phrases. Overall I think this is a great and very useful book and I would recommend any Russian learner buy it as well as the other books from Lingo Mastery.

This book is a decent attempt at throwing together a large number of useful Russian phrases for people interested in learning it, in which there doesn't appear to be too much material out there these days. But I'd be very surprised if any native Russian speakers were involved in the process. Unfortunately, too many phrases are repeated throughout the book, or reworded and placed elsewhere but mean the exact same thing. In some other cases which I noticed - and I'm a beginner myself - some phrases just didn't sound right. They had too much of the Anglophone flowery language about them, something not characteristic of Russian, which is a very to-the-point language. Another flaw I noticed, quite considerable in my opinion, is that while most of the phrases' Russian translations are written in Cyrillic print form, sometimes they're written in cursive form. Just trying to familiarise yourself with Cyrillic can be difficult enough without having to learn the cursive form - which is like another language in itself! Overall, the book is useful, but it's meant for beginners who have some prior knowledge of Russian and/or the culture. In general, you should expect to go through this book with a red pen to scratch out a fair bit of useless or incorrect phrases, but once you've pointed these out the book is useful.
