A Lovely Christmas Book
The illustrations are sweet and detailed. Even the rats are charming! Just love looking through this book. Would recommend this book be added to your Christmas time reading list.

Fantastic Christmas story
We love the pictures of the tomtens' little world, and the story itself is fun. We added this to our Christmas Eve book reading routine, and leave a little bowl of "porridge" out for the tomtens' along with cookies for Santa.

Its a true GEM!
Sven's illustrations are very detailed. You notice more details each time you read such as little Tomtens on the porridge bowl changing their facial features. My son, who received this book before turning 4, begs to have it read. It has introduced us to Swedish christmas traditions such as handmade ornaments, yule goats, branch candles in red candlelabra, and tomtens that we adore - similar to Elsa Beskow's Peter and Lotta's Christmas and Astrid Lindgren's Children of Noisy Village. Its the kind of book that allows you to go back in time and relive what life was like prior to commercialized Christmas and people distracted by technology. I never had a childhood where we read too much and this book is a true gem.

Children’s book
Great story for children of Swedish decent. Tells of the things children in Sweden hear all their young years. I heard these things from my Grandmother.

passing on traditions
I was looking for an appropriate book for my grand daughters, ages 4 and 18 months, to begin some of the traditions of their Scandinavian great grand father. This is just what I was looking for. The story is interesting for both ages, and the illustrations hold their attention. We even put out my TOMTE'S and left a small bowl of dried oatmeal for their porridge to thank them for taking care of us all year. The quality of the book is wonderful and it will remain in our family for many years .

A Christmas classic
This is a lovely story based on old Swedish folklore and is illustrated beautifully. You have to look carefully to see what is going on in the background - such as the mouse, cooking a sausage over a candle, on the family Christmas tree.Don't buy it to give on Christmas Day, though - it is a Christmas Eve tale and will be enjoyed all the more if read before going to bed on the 24th. It will come out year after year from the Christmas book box and be greeted with delight as an old friend.

Beautiful christmas story much loved by kids and adults (amazing illustrations)
Wonderfully illustrated book with a beautiful story. Very nice for young children and has lots of christmas magic without it being related to santa and commercial present giving.

Fun for both kids and parents
Sven Nordqvists artwork is the best. It's a childrens book that i think even a parent can enjoy while he / her read it to his child.

Disappointing, expected a better story about Tomte
This story was difficult to get through, it’s really not a good one for preschool children. It encourages lying and deceit, in that the mother decides to lie to her husband so he won’t be vengeful and angry, and gets the help of her children to trick him. Some of the concepts I didn’t feel where appropriate or enjoyable to read to my four year old. I had to improvise portions of the book.
