Comprehensive guide
This is maybe the best guide book for planning a walk on the AV1. There are better online tools, at a different price level and less detailed information. This book includes the V11, a VF which is part of the classic AV1. The maps are reproduced from Tabacco. In my opinion the quality of these maps lack in detail, but I can't hold that against this book. The section about WW1 history is both relevant and useful for an area which takes you straight through one of the important battle grounds from The Great War.The book is packed with useful tips and good information. It is obvious that the author knows the area from own experience, and has been able to convert this to a practical and good planning tool. Extra credit to author for having used own photos.

The only thing you need
Due to the pandemic, we had to suddenly change our plans and we decided to do AV1 instead. We didn’t do much research about AV1 prior to starting our hike and we were so glad that we bought this book! We only relied on this book for planning, routing, maps, etc. We didn’t have to use other books or additional maps and felt the need for them. The size of the book is just perfect. The map size is also just perfect. However the estimated hiking time in the book is just impossible for us to follow! Overall we love this book and I’d definitely buy more hiking books from Andrew!

What a spectacular guidebook!
The first thing that struck me was the incredible maps. I know that it is advertized as having real maps inside, but the full double page maps are amazing. I had bought separately three Tabacco maps for the trek which cost me £36. As it turns out I did not need to do so – the exact same maps are in Knife Edge’s book. The next thing that strikes me is the itineraries. There are 7 of them! With all the distances, times, altitude gains calculated for each. Its gonna make planning sooooo easy. So helpful. Finally the pictures in the book are awesome. I am salivating over them! Can’t wait to do the trek!

An exceptional modern guidebook
The information inside is excellent and to the point. Planning is easy because of the 7 different itineraries provided. Normally guidebooks include one. And all distances, time, etc are provide for each itinerary.Navigation will be easy too because the route is clearly marked on the Tabacco 1:25k maps printed in the book. That must have cost the publisher a fortune! It saves the trekker money and weight because i believe 4 sheet maps are required for the AV1Finally the production is superb. Beautiful full page colour photos. Frankly I would buy this book just to dream about the trek even if I had no intention of doing it.

The perfect quide for planning an AV1 hike
As I've not departed for our hike to the AV1 yet I can only review how helpful this book has been for the planning process. Each stage is broken down into sections so it's easy for the hiker to plan their day according to how long they'd prefer to walk each day. This lets you arrange accommodation at the most convenient points for your own requirements. There are detailed maps and route notes for each section and having used the Knife Edge Outdoor guide book on the Tour Du Mont Blanc last summer I'm sure the instructions in this version will be just as easy to follow.I found there was significantly less information available online when researching the AV1 as compared to the TMB so this book was invaluable in planning our trip, especially in deciding how to break each stage. The Tobacco maps required for the whole trek are expensive and rather bulky and having compared them to the maps in the book I will be leaving them at home to save weight - the book contains everything you need. It's also a handy size for slipping in a pocket and the pages are pretty tough so will stand-up to the odd mountain downpour!

Amazing Maps, Information, and Easy to Use!!
We are so happy we purchased Andrew's Book! We have plans to do the Alta Via 1, and coordinating the rifugios and route seemed difficult, so we almost paid to have it done for us. We ordered Andrew's book and are almost done with our booking process. The book is very pleasant to use, in terms of pictures and clarity. Various routes and # of days are presented, as well as all the information on the rifugios, and the actual Tobacco maps, broken down by sections. What we thought would be a cumbersome process, was made much easier! We even joined a FB group and have had personally Andrew help with our questions. Highly recommend!!
