A moving, challenging read - recommended
This is a wonderfully tight, bright and compelling autobiography that brings conservation volunteering in Africa, as well as challenges of contemporary living in the West, to life with truly magical prose. Sonia guides us through the choices and challenges of her life, decisions that we can relate to because the story of this book is also a story of choices and decisions that many of us have to make too. There’s a subtle fury to this novel about the way the conditions of modern life tend to stifle our decisions and can be destructive, not just in our own lives and in the natural environment, but in every aspect. This book delicately addresses this point and charts Sonia’s journey first to acknowledge these issues, and then to overcome them. It’s a really beautiful book; I read it in nearly one sitting and it won’t be the last time I read it. Recommended to anyone who likes to be challenged and genuinely moved by their read.

Affirming memoir of a woman who followed her dreams
Sonia Rosenblatt's memoir traces her path from her origins in Ireland, through unsatisfying desk jobs in Canada, to her decision to join a series of animal conservation projects in South Africa and Botswana. Based on her contemporary blog, "A Lion's Roar" tells of her experiences as a volunteer there with immediacy and vividness. Her crisp, charged writing style conveys the transformative nature of interacting with the great animals of the savannah, and of the encounter with an extreme remoteness which is not quite peace.I enjoyed this book very much. I recommend it to anyone who loves animals or nature.

Inspirational
I loved reading about all the adventures which at first seem pretty normal and then you really think about them and realise how freaked out you’d feel seeing and animal killed for bait or huge spiders in the toilets... this trip was definitely character building and an amazing opportunity to be able to do a trip like this

Powerful and moving
This is a moving account of a trip to Africa. Sonia takes the reader on a powerful journey from which the reader emerges with a real sense and understanding of forces stronger than us which can change lives. A beautiful and unforgettable story.

A trampled soul breathes again.
I loved this book. It is so bald, so transparent, so real. The deflation is real, the exhilaration is real. Sonia writes of places I too have visited in my own African journey. The lion's roar she hears - such a cornerstone in her life from that time on - is one I can feel and touch. I felt a kinship with Sonia as she navigated her various experiences - not just outwardly but inwardly. This book helped more of my breath find its way through and out of me as I sat within my African soul for a few more days. Thank you Sonia.

Transport Yourself to the African Game Parks
I have always been fascinated by the game parks of Africa, and the wildlife found in them. I have gone on safari, and spent time watching the animals in the game parks. However this wa just a limited period of time.Reading this book allowed me to take myself back to the game parks and wildlife there, especially the big cats. If you love the African wildlife read this book and follow a story which is covers the author's own relationship with these amazing animals and the effect her experiences of twelve weeks volunteering among them had on her.

Beautiful and empathetic story about being true to one's dreams and values!
A very compelling tale about finding one's path, one's place in this world. This book is a little bit like a meditation on life, dreams and meaning of an individual choice. The universalism of Sonia's writing is very touching and can resonate with many people in today's world. Lion's Roar is also about the woman and her position in the current ever-changing world and how she connects with the rest of humanity. The story of Sonia shows how women can be nuanced regardless of their background or where they come from.Africa provides a background for this story and is also a character in this tale. This book depicts the importance of 'the place' and its impact on the individual life choices.Highly recommended :)
