Yes, 35mm ideally but depends on what the battery is being used for also size (battery power rating) and how long the cable run is to the fuse box, 25mm could be fine. Look at the cable ratings per mm e g 35mm for up to 270 amps, 25 for 170 etc

Q: is this soilid copper strands or copper clad aluminium?

Solid copper multi strand excellent flex for installation made a great job !

Q: Can the 16mm 20m cable be used to connect a lightening rod to the earth rod?

All down conductors I have seen have been copper strip, probably about 300mm!!
