StreaMachine ST13 Review
Hello all!I have been looking for a 13.3 inch tablet for quite some time. My primary goal is read full page technical manuals. My dream tablet had to have an excellent display, decent connectivity, decent memory, a microSD card slot, and an O.K. processor. It also had to be in the realm of affordability for an autism daddy of two wonderful girls. I have had a deal alert for a long time for this size and 12.2 inch as well. The occasional refurb Hannspree would show up. The occasional insanely expensive Samsung would show up. Finally, Sony Paper is $1050 on sale!!!!When I checked my standard favorites that I had set up, I noticed this specific model (the white 8GB) was on sale for $200. I jumped on it.First, the display. It is excellent. It is highly viewable from a wide range of angles. It is full HD. It is IPS. It renders my PDFs something AWESOME! My pages will fill the screen of a 12.2 inch screen. This display leaves a couple of inches on the top and bottom making room for a schematic or visio drawing perhaps? This is the tablet to get for SHEET MUSIC. Buy this now if you are a musician.Second, the speakers. This are the worst part of the tablet. They are QUIET. You cannot really hear anything even on maximum volume. A blue tooth speaker or wired headset is a MUST.Third, wifi is good but limited to 2.4 GHZ N. Meh.Fourth, 2GB of RAM. This is important folks! Do not buy any tablet that only has 1GB of RAM for any price. My kids and I deserve better.Fifth, the storage amount is a bit small at 8GB. However, there was a $80 difference between 8GB and 16GB with no other improvements to justify the higher price tag. The system firmware resides in this 8 GB leaving you about 5 GB for apps and such. This would not normally be a problem as it is very very lean and has mostly just Google's apps pre-installed. (A requirement of the Google Play Store.)However, my kids are never going to touch this tablet. I am an engineer and need a tool. Therefore, I had to root it. Kingoroot works after you remember to turn on Developer mode and enable ADB. However, you must install it using the PC version ONLY. The google standard USB drivers supposedly work. I downloaded the robomobo store to my pc. It found the right drivers, installed them, and then installed itself on my tablet. I uninstalled robomobo from my PC and my tablet. The drivers stayed. I was being very very lazy. Get Kingoroot directly from its homepage and nowhere else. After I had a successful root, I uninstalled everything except for Camera, Gallery, Launcher 3, and NetNanny. NetNanny is hardcoded. If you remove it you will break core.android.ui. There is no recovery image so dont be stupid. Use ES Strong File Explorer to remove your apps. Configure it to backup apps first before removing them. You cannot replace the launcher. There is no mechanism in which you can store a setting in which to keep your new launcher as default. DO NOT REMOVE Launcher3. You will break core.android.ui. You will be very very sorry. After all that, I had my tablet pared down to 3 GB leaving 5 GB for apps. I definitely removed all the kid apps and Child mode. I installed most of my usual work apps: The microsoft Office suite, Mantano reader, and such. You can ask me for an explicit list of my engineering standard apps load.Battery life is incredible! It got through an ENTIRE day from 6:30 am to 10 pm and had room to spare. Its pin charger is also a 3 AMP charger. That is unheard of. It charges the massive 10000mah battery very quickly. This unit will also accept a 2 AMP charge from a high end microUSB charger. It will take longer to charge but I have this sitting on my desk at work with no problem. It has 2 microUSB ports and an HDMI port. It can be easily made into a full workstation.Whats the catch? The processor. The processor is a Rockchip RK3188. Here is the entry from wikipedia.RK31xx seriesThe RK3188 was the first product in the RK31xx series, announced for production in the 2nd quarter of 2013. The RK3188 features a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 clocked up to 1.6 GHz frequency. It is targeted at tablets and Android TV dongles and boxes, and has been a popular choice for both tablets and other devices requiring good performance.28 nm HKMG process at GlobalFoundriesQuad-core ARM Cortex-A9, up to 1.6 GHz512 KB L2 cacheMali-400 MP4 GPU, up to 600 MHz (typically 533 MHz) supporting OpenGL ES 1.1/2.0, Open G 1.1High performance dedicated 2D processorDDR3, DDR3L, LPDDR2 supportDual-panel display up to 2048x1536 resolutionIt is a mid 2013 processor. It is decent for my purposes.THIS IS NOT A GAME TABLET. If you want to jam out or play games, do not buy. The Mali 400 squeaks out 10-12 fps is most 3D games. 2D performance is also crap, max of 30 fps. However, you can stream shows and watch movies. 30 fps is all you need to watch Netflix without flicker. The listing shows a 1.6 Pentium M processor. In the details, it says the processor is a Samsung. Which is it? It is neither. I will be placing a claim for a partial refund. Either processor would have made this tablet an even more insane deal. Too bad.To Hardline Group LLC, who sells this tablet, please identify all of your tablets specs and people wont ask for some of their money back.It comes with a really good case. That is a nice surprise! If you want a different case, there aren't any. Find a friend with a 3D printer. It also comes with a "screen protector" already applied. Do not peel it off! There is nowhere to get a replacement that fits. I bought a screen protector for a 13.3" Chromebook. I will use my exacto knife on it and have a decent protector at that point. There is another SUPER important fault. In the current build, this tablet DOES NOT recover from deep sleep at default. You must set the time out to at least 5 minutes. After I did that, the tablet sleeps normally.Summary: It is the best overall value of any tablet. If you want to install lots of apps, you must get the 16GB version. I think it is still the best value even at $280. It is a great work tablet. It is a bitchin' good book reader. It is an OK streamer if you have a quiet environment or headphones. It sucks at games very badly. It keeps you on task that way! Still, 13.3 inch display in full HD rocking the Netflix is pretty awesome. It goes more than all day on a single charge. Mostly because you wont be playing any fancy games on it and the giant battery.I paired it with my trusty Elite laser keyboard to freak out the norms at Starbucks. I use a Logitech H800 with it for Skype. The front facing camera is meh as well but most tablet front facing cameras are.Verdict: Buy it. I give it four stars due to the crap speakers.

One fairly important issue, but otherwise doing well.
Mostly working fine. There is an issue of the tablet not responding to controls if left untouched but on, especially while you watch a video, and since you probably buy a tablet this size to watch video, that can be an annoyance. The video will still play, but you cannot pause or exit. BUT, if you press the screen-off button and then press it again to turn the screen back on, you can swipe in and the controls will be working. So, a workaround. This method does not appear to work if you use a PIN, but try your own luck. This issue does not seem related to any particular video app. Videos can apparently be paused for a long time without issue. Problem is not persistent, just a bit of a frequent bug. Not a huge issue to me, but annoying. The tablet can also apparently freeze if you leave it untouched on home screen or on certain apps for more than about ten minutes. You may have to reboot, At this time, I am testing my apps to see which ones don't freeze. Happily, my e-reading app (FBReader) doesn't freeze up, and Google Play Music doesn't appear to freeze up. Chrome browser doesn't seem to freeze. With video players, as I mentioned, only the controls freeze. I'm still testing. Again, not a constant issue, but an identifiable bug.For those who have said that the tablet is too quiet, you are correct, but the "Speaker Boost" app, which is free, really boosts the volume, even without an attached speaker. (Omega Centauri software makes the app. You have the right one if you see repeated warnings about blowing your speakers. It is effective, so be careful.) Sound is pleasant, not bad at all, really. Here's an avoidable/fixable issue: Somehow, I'm not sure how, I was able to enter a password for the Child Safe portion of the tablet without having to confirm that password, and then I couldn't log out of Child Safe for the life of me. I was able to reset the tablet using relatively standard android methods. Info on how can be found for this model if you search for Southern Telecom ST13 data reset. Once I reset, everything seemed to work a little better, I was able to set the Child Safe password without issue, I think it is a good idea to turn the thing on and wait about half an hour while it updates and so on, before exploring. I did not root this tablet, as I wanted to run Playstation Vue on it and that app says it won't work with a rooted device. The screen is large and at least as bright as other android tablets. Browsing is easy enough on the eyes. The included case/stand is good enough, if you want something padded you'll have to go after-market. Using an SD card is not a hassle, I'm currently using a 32 Gig. Internal space available in the 8 Gig model is not huge, but unless you are planning to load this up with apps, you should be fine. I have only about 12 non-preloaded apps on mine, but room for a couple dozen more big ones at least (2.1 Gigs, with no personal files in internal memory), not including any that may run from SD card.It gives a nice two-page view for ebooks, or a huge one-page view if your eyes are getting tired. Makes a great comic book reader! Really a nice view for comics!I've included a picture of the screen with a two-liter soda bottle in front, to give you an idea of size. Also a view of a comic book. Finally, a 7-inch tablet next to the 13.3-inch, with a pencil and pen in foreground for comparison. (And an old phone. :0)Questions, feel free to ask! I thank all the other reviewers for their insights as well!

Works Reasonably Well For Reading Music Charts
I purchased it primarily for storing and reading sheet music. The device works well so far, in that it has exhibited no technical problems, but I've had it only for a couple of weeks. Two complaints, however:1. The user guide says it takes up to a 64GB micro SD chip - IT DOES NOT! After purchasing and installing a 64GB chip, the device did not "see" it. A call to customer support revealed that it only supports up to a 32GB chip.2. Being an iOS user, I am not very familiar with the Android OS, so I haven't yet figured out how to do everything, but one thing seems clear, it will not write to the chip.I am using Mobile Sheets Pro and it works reasonably well on the device, although on charts that have more than 2 pages, there is sometimes a delay while the next page loads. This is particularly true when an entire set list has been loaded. Not sure if this is due to the app or the device. I think MSP will read charts stored on the chip, but I haven't gotten that far yet. No problem downloading charts into MSP from Dropbox.Battery life seems quite good. Got through a 2 hr rehearsal and used up only 15% of the battery. Unit works well with a Bluetooth foot pedal for page turning. In portrait orientation, the large screen size makes the charts more readable than a regular sized iPad. I also purchased a Grafiti Nootle and Smallrig Cool BallHead Arm to attach the unit to a music stand.I will update this review once I've had more experience with the device.
