How much water does it hold?

One US gallon, or 3.7 liters. NOT ENOUGH. 1 gallon is too small for a betta - it cannot be safely heated (and betta are tropical fish! they need a heater!) and ammonia builds up too quickly. I urge you to look at something that is at LEAST 2.5 gallons, or better yet 5 gallons for a beginner. Larger setups are easier to maintain - toxins don't build up as fast and it's easier to keep a stable temperature the more water there is.

can you take the lid off?

Yes the lid can be lifted off easily. But, there is a opening in the center of the lid for easy feeding.

Just received my new tank and now im looking for some glass stones that will look great in the tank with the LED lights on- does anyone recommend any?

I used clear & clear blue glass stones in two sizes but to be honest the lighting affect from the 4 led bulbs in the base of this aquarium does not replace a light coming from the top as most aquariums have. I use a small round overhead stick on battery powered led light that I attached to the bottom of my hutch which is directly over my aquarium. I turn it on & off to my liking. It really is a matter of personal taste. You might find that the built in light suits you fine. Good Luck!
