The Definitive Guide to symfony

I know that symfony has release 2.0, and this is for the 1.x flavor. However, the 1.x stuff is still really good and stable. This book seems to be the one hardcopy set of docs that I need.

Well written and understandable for such a large chunk of software. You can be the judge yourself, of course, by reading it online before you buy the hard copy. I'd definitely recommend having the real thing if you're just starting with symfony though.. you can't dogear or bookmark the online version.

Symfony is one of the few well documented web application frameworks. Even so, the authors gave a great contribution to those willing to learn the basics as well as the complex aspects of Symfony in a clear, direct manner. Two thumbs up!

Apress books are great, but this one is for Symfony 1.x. Symfony 2.0 came out in mid-2011, and as of December 2013, the current version is 2.4. The differences between the two versions are significant enough that I wouldn't recommend using this book. Hopefully they'll publish a revised edition soon.

the book covers version 1 of synfony, it will give you a rough idea about what synfony is about and would be totally useful for version 1 but there have been major changes introduced in version 2 where this book would not be that helpful.4 or 5 stars if you plan on using the old framework, otherwise 1 or 2 stars.

The books contains all the information you can find in the online manual on the website of the symfony project.If you know this before (and I did), the book has the same quality like the online manual, in my opinion a very good one.

If you're serious on developing web applications using a PHP Framework (MVC style) then you need to use the symfony framework. And if you do then you'll need this book. It's a very good introduction to this framework. The book is full of code examples, so it's a good place to search for tricks.This book it's permanently on my desktop...

I must start by saying that anyone buying this book is doing so because they have already referenced the online version available from the Symfony web site. There is nothing new in the book, it is a print of the online version and as stated in a previous review a title that will adorn a place on your desk while you familiarise yourself with Symfony.So it gets 5* because I knew _exactly_ what I was buying when I bought it. Covers most of the bases I needed as a newcomer to Symfony.If I had to be critical I would say that the book could do with a front-to-cover example that pulled everything together. As it stands it is a reference manual and not a learn by example kind of book. However the Symfony web site has a perfect tutorial (Askeet) that does just this and the book is an excellent reference while working through it.I would also like to point out that Symfony is a comprehensive framework. There is a learning curve and having a printed book to browse through helps. I spend much of my professional life working with Java frameworks and find the same true there. This book (plus the online tutorial) is as good as any I have read in the Java realm.If you are still not convinced, take a look at the online version. After you have switched windows a hundred times because you keep referencing it I am sure you will agree that a printed copy that you can annotate is worth every penny.

C'était un bon livre mais il est obsolète maintenant avec les nouvelles versions de Symfony.Dommage également qu'il n'existe pas en français.
