Caldwel Recoil Shield with Adjustable Fit, Thick Padding, for Range, Shooting, Hunting, and Outdoors

I bought this mainly for shooting heavy recoiling centerfire rifles from positions that tend to make recoil particularly punishing, namely sitting, bench, and (worst of all) prone. I tested it earlier today from the bench with my Ruger M77 .30-06 with my full power handloads, then let 'er rip. I could hardly feel the recoil at all, and there was not even a hint of pain, even though I really leaned into it and took as much of the punch as possible. It's reasonably comfortable, although a bit thick in the pad region, but that allows it to take up so much more shock. You have to fasten the chest strap with a Fastex buckle, and there's a secondary snap for your belt to hold it down if you want to use it, but that's not essential for a short time at the bench. Quality construction, and the pad face is a soft, slightly suede leather to allow smooth shouldering of the butt stock. I really like it, and highly recommend it for shooting rifles and shotguns in the recoil category of the .270 and up, especially from the three positions I mentioned I am using this for, and for extended shooting sessions. It gets the job done so well that even my fifteen year old daughter can handle my .30-06 with ease using this wearable recoil pad.

I recently had to rapid fire 200+ rounds of heavily loaded slugs and buckshot from a semi-auto shotgun. With just a T-shirt and a smile for padding. Halfway through, my smile faded and I had to take a break from the painful bruising in my shoulder. I got the Super Mag Plus with the thickest padding (1 inch) and went back at it. This time I felt nothing. No pain at all. I would highly recommend this to all shotgun users. Some people I’ve talked to says that these kinds of shoulder pads don’t work at all, but I think they have just not tried this Super Mag Plus with 1 inch padding. It’s makes an enormous difference to your comfort when shooting! The fit felt good for me (6.1” 210lbs) and I very much appreciate the rough (but soft) leather on both sides of the padding - it makes for a firm and stable hold between buttstock, pad and body. It works great both outside clothing, inside clothing or between clothing. One downside when using this thick padding is that you have to take this into account when mounting the shotgun. If you just lift the buttstock straight up to your cheek, it might bump into the shoulder pad. So you’ll have to move the shotgun forward away from your body a little bit so it clears the padding before you can mount it properly. It’s a muscle memory training thing, if you want to do this fast and consistently.

I read a review of this product somewhere else, besides Amazon, and decided to give this a try. AM I GLAD I DID!! I am older (70) with the resultant muscle degradation, and the only reason I am still able to shoot my full-sized rifles is this pad. I shoot my M-1 Garand (30-06) and Mauser (8MM), both with steel butt plates with no problems. I use to limit my shooting because of the recoil and the abuse to my shoulder. I now shoot to the limit of my body being able to hold up the rifle steady. In the standing position, I just don't get to shoot as many accurate shots as I did as a younger man. My only complaint is that the pad slips off my shoulder sometimes and I have to readjust it. This may be due to the fact that I am 6' 2" and 230 lbs. But, it does not slip when the rifle is nestled in my shoulder and ready to fire. I would recommend that if you have any recoil aversion at all, you purchase this shoulder pad and give it a try. It has added immensely to my enjoyment and accuracy when shooting my full-caliber rifles. Also, I have popped off a few 12-gauge rounds while using the pad. Same thing, no debilitating recoil. I definitely encourage you to try this product.

Wow. I got this for a Barrett m99 (bolt action so all the energy goes straight into your shoulder) and it makes a huge difference. Before I could only manage 7 rounds before I was in too much pain to continue shooting accurately. With this I put 15 rounds through and didn’t even feel it. This results in greater accuracy since I don’t anticipate the shot nearly as much. Not sure how it would fit on a larger guy since I’m only a little above average size and it can be slightly difficult to put on due to the clip hanging awkwardly behind my back. Once it’s on though it fits well and doesn’t seem to move however I only use it for bench rest shooting. It might move a bit after a day of hunting and hiking although it’s easy to readjust so that might not even be noticeable. I like the colors and the construction feels solid and high quality. I consider this money well spent since it makes a day at the range much more enjoyable. If you have any big caliber or large recoil gun I high recommend it!

The Recoil Shield has saved my hunting. I had a reverse shoulder replacement last January. After the doctor released me, I fired my 12ga “mag. It was not pleasant to say the least. I did some searching and found the Caldwell shield. Being familiar with the brand and their quality products (I have a shooting sled) I jumped on it. My order arrived when promised. I unpacked it and tried it on, but found the back elastic strap that attaches to the belt was defective. I contacted Caldwell for a return. I dropper the shield off at Kohl’s and received the replacement 2 days later. I used the Shield to zero my .50 cal. muzzleloader and was extremely pleased with the comfort and performance. Thank you for a great product. I highly recommend this to any hunter or sport shooter who has had a shoulder replacement. By the way, I got the first deer I saw this season and am looking forward to getting out again.

It works better than expected. Basically cuts the recoil of any shoulder braced firearm in half if not more. I would trust this to be just as effective with a high cal rifle. Update: I used this while firing an older 30-30 cal and wow,what a huge difference. Highly impressed with how much of the kick this pad absorbed. Next test will be with a 12 ga pump with 18” barrel. I’m guessing it will pass the test.
