Slightly disappointed but only a little.
(Written by Brenda's husband who has been an amateur entomologist for about 65 years.) A fantastic gallery of state of the art photographs of various insect orders right down to family level. The text covers a lot of ground but only at a elementary level for those with some previous understanding of insect classification. Professor Marshall lives and works in Ontario Canada and hence his book is essentially about the insects of north- east America. This is specified in the sub-title in the book but not clearly stated in any Amazon write-up. I had expected a more world wide coverage but it wasn't to be and there lay the seeds of my slight disappointment. So-saying, the author is a world expert of many years standing with a considerable reputation. His presentation and writing styles are user friendly and very worthwhile and you will never be bored. If you are well read and with a good knowledge of British insects then this book will open up new horizons. However, if you are just starting out as a potential entomologist and live in the UK there are better books to read that are nearer to home, like Bugs Britannica for starters. Most of the insects illustrated you will never see unless you often travel to eastern, North America for insect safaris. If you just like superb photographs of insects regardless, then you won't be at all disappointed!

The Reviews are Spot On!
I am the head caretaker at a NY state campground. I call it Paradise with Bugs. This is the most awesome and thorough field guide I have ever owned on any subject. I have already identified several minute insects that are never mentioned anywhere, and even hard to find on the internet. I am reading it cover to cover, can't help myself, the photographs are so clear, the text is concise and detailed, and in a pinch I think I could throw it at a bear and knock him out...It's a BIG book, over 700 pages. IF you are a citizen naturalist like myself, you will get more than what you paid for in the first week, learning the behavior, locale and habits of insects familiar and strange.

Excelente libro.
Compre este material para un regalo, me gustó tanto, que compre uno para mí. ( Sin tener una *** idea de los insectos.Es un libro pesado ( quizá unosy4 a 5 kilos) grande, con excelentes fotografías.Llegó súper rápido.

Why didn't I buy this earlier
This is such a useful book. I don't know why I didn't buy it earlier. Helpful for learning many families and subfamilies of insects with clear pictures and descriptions.

Excellent overview of insect diversity and photo guide to Eastern N. Am. insects
I really enjoyed this book and read it cover to cover. Marshall is good at providing even detailed, technical information in an interesting way. If you want a more in depth overview of the diversity of insects than the excellent Kaufman field guide to North American insects, I highly recommend this. But beware, this is a big, heavy book – certainly not something to take into the field, and the size makes it unwieldy to read while lying in bed. But the upside is that it allows for display of thousands of photos of different species of insects. It can be a very good resource for narrowing down identifications, especially in eastern North America.
