It should work very well - this phone holder is for vent mount only and will tighten up nicely on your vent - we have one for a Honda Odyssey, a Honda CR-V, a Mazda CX-5 - they all do very well - do not over tighten as it could possibly break the vent slats - you may have to experiment with it's placement but it works great in our vehicles

Has anyone had any luck with thicker air vents like in the newer KIA's?

Not sure I can completely answer the question. I’m not familiar with Kia. One of my vehicles is a Toyota with large round vents that are rounded on the inside too, except for the bottom vent blade. The bottom vent blade is flat on the backside and is the blade that I use to attach the Miracase. It has been working well.
