It is either 2 players or 4 players. It is not for 3 players. One deck can be used for a 2 player game, or both decks can be used to play a 2 vs 2 four player game with teams.

Does this game have to be played in pairs? Could 3 or 5 players play?

You could play in a 'round' similarly to "Go Fish".

Do the colors matter? if I want three decks do they all have to be different for 6 players?

The colors do not matter. You can play a 6 player game with 3 decks of the same color.

Can I use the strategies I learn from this game and take them to a Vegas blackjack table?

I don't think so because this game isn't like blackjack. It's more like stratego.
