removable so you can reconfigure to best meet one’s storage needs, or are they permanently glued in-place?

The dividers are glued in. I removed them with a screwdriver. It wasn't perfect but it was fully functional. You do have to be careful prying the dividers out but I did it on 3 different units. The difficulty varies by the amount of glue. I looked for weak spots. I suppose you could glue them back in but i did not see why i would want them. I hope this helps.

What is the exact depth of the drawers?

The inside dimension of the drawers are L 14.5 x W 5.25 x D 5/8 (but the drawer allows up to 7/8" tall item) The drawer face is wider than the drawer box that holds the item you are storing.

If I buy more than one set, can you stack them sturdily?

I have 6 drawer units and they stack just fine. When you stack them, each unit sets in front of a rail as seen in the picture. I would not add any hardware as the wood is very thin, if you're concerned, some double sided mounting tape would secure them.

About how many pens fit in each drawer?

I use these drawers for pastel pencils and pastels. One drawer will hold 42-46 pencils.
