The New Seekers: Gold

For you they sing….
I don’t want to list all the line-up changes in the New Seekers, but the first incarnation (formed in the summer of 1969) offered their own special brand of ‘sunshine-pop’. The B-side ‘It’s a beautiful day’ (1970) is a fine example of the latter. Disc one gets off to a fine start with ‘Meet my Lord’, and tracks 1-9 are particularly enjoyable. In 1972 I was lying in Fulwood Annex, Sheffield after an operation to remove a strange growth from the edge of my hand (once caught, it wouldn’t stop bleeding). Mouth-watering food was served on trolleys, but the nurses wouldn’t give me any (after the anesthetic). It was helpful to hear ‘Never ending song of love’ on the radio, along with ‘Clair’ (Gilbert O’Sullivan), ‘Goodbye to love’ (Carpenters) and ‘How can I be sure’ (David Cassidy). When the New Seekers performed 6 Eurovision compositions on television, ‘Beg steal or borrow’ was chosen as the 1972 UK entry. The latter and ‘one by one’ are included here. The remaining Eurovision contenders were ‘Sing out’, ‘Why can’t we all get together’, ‘Out on the edge of beyond’ and ‘Songs of praise’ (by Roy Wood, whose compositions ‘Tonight’ and ‘Blackberry way’ were also covered by the group). The single flipsides allowed the band members some creative control, but the (often mediocre) results don’t always sit easily with the hits. At the same time, I’m grateful that the B-sides have been rescued from obscurity (and scratchy vinyl). After disbanding in May 1974, the group reformed between 1976 and 1979. Songs from their two CBS albums can be found on disc 3. The excellent singles include ‘Anthem’, ‘It’s so nice’, ‘I wanna go back’ and ‘do you wanna make love’? A fine cover of Doctor Hook’s ‘A little bit more’ is not included here.I remember Lyn Paul appearing on the ‘the Weakest Link’ with Anne Robinson (she was forced to sing unaccompanied). Sadly, Peter Doyle died of throat cancer in October 2001. His ‘foghorn’ voice was used to good effect on the famous Coca Cola song ‘I’d like to teach the world to sing’ (in 1971).‘New Seekers Gold’ (2020) does not contain ALL the career highlights, but it’s a good-value compilation. Likeable songs such as ‘morning has broken’ and ‘Look what you’ve done’ have been overlooked in favour of hits and rarities. A superior version of ‘Come softly to me’ can be found on a 1982 solo album by Buck Dharma of Blue Oyster Cult (called ‘Flat out’).

Best group of 70s
Fantastic can't get enough of New Seekers. Best vocals of 70s. This is a stunning collection bringing back my youth Had their posters on my wall was totally in love with Peter Doyle and I still say he has the best vocals ever heard. Listening to this cd brings such pleasure and happy memories but also sadness that we lost the wonderful Peter Doyle too soon and also Kathy and Danny. If you loved The New Seekers buy this and fall in love with them again.

Music Fabulous, record and sleeve not so good!
UPDATED - The music is great, and the recording quality brilliant. The sound quality is excellent and the music of the New Seekers brilliant too! There is no issue with the music but the sleeve is all damaged and the record scratched. This happens on nearly every album I buy from Amazon and in getting fed up with it! Buy the album for the music, but you’ll probably end up sending it back if you value the condition of the sleeve and the vinyl itself.

Pure New Seekers Gold
A new collection of New Seekers songs and this features all the singles A and B sides. I wanna go back and listen again and again. Some real gems included and I can remember these singles on release. Its great to hear them in such good quality. The New Serkers really did sing in perfect harmony. Highly recommrnded release for a nostalgia trip down memory lane. Maybe 70s songs but boy they sound terrific in the 2020s!! Pure Gold!

Excellent 3CD / 140g Vinyl Release from 70s Superstars
One of the better 3CD Gold collections - 3 CDs of ALL the single releases from ALL of the band's line ups. Includes the magnificent full album version of 'Circles' - which is not usually used on the group's hit compilations. Tracks on CD3 will be unfamiliar to many fans, but it's always good to discover 'new' tracks. Also available on 140g vinyl - the first New Seekers release on vinyl for many, many years. Top notch 👍 BUY IT!
