Valuable but it's just a toy machine.
I own QNAP TS-551 (J3355 2c + 8G), Synology DS220J (RTD1296 4c + 512MB Onboard) and the QNAP TS-230 (RTD1296 4c + 2GB Onboard). I would say all ARM-based NASs can only undertake general file operations and a little bit of torrenting. Yes, you can reach up to 500Mbps downloading speed at QBittorrent on your TS-230, but that's it. It is impossible to handle dirty jobs like video transcoding, QSirch (based on Elasticsearch) and QuMagie (faces/objects detection) on this toy. So if your requirements are just to organize file backups and photos, that's good. And by the way, the facade of TS-230 is fine, lighting water blue and twills.Still not receiving the QTS 5.0 release, so I give 3 stars at the User Interface section since the human-computer interactions (HCI) of the QTS 4.0 are terrible. As for Tech Support, QNAP did not apologise for their mistake on the QLocker events, seems like their tech supports do not exist for customers.

Really great and capable NAS
Having had WD MyCloud drives for years and always having problems with them I bit the bullet & spent out on a QNAP drive, straight away I noticed the difference, my old WD drive was slow and had a tendency to just crash (requiring restart) if you did a large file copy, whereas the QNAP is fast, responsive, has a host of amazing features and just does it. As a DJ I can access all of my massive music collection via DNLA without any problems and run a local web server for testing sites I am developing, both on my PC and on my phone and have set up automatic sync to Google drive for important file backup. There is so much more it can do I have only just scratched the surface but this drive is great.

Does what you expect.
This device does everything it is supposed to do. For the novice (like myself) it is quite fiddly to set up. the online manual is almost useless. I watched many you tube videos to learn how to get it to do what i Wanted. Nothing much just a media server, which works surprisingly well given the low specs for the device, and a file server for documents etc. My difficulty in setting it up was not helped by one of the disks, purchased separately from Amazon, was faulty and I did not realise this as the seemed to be recognised and formatted normally. (Full refund from Amazon). I am pleased with the device and now just leave it to work in the background. One point of note disks larger then 4Tb can be noisy but not too bad and the device puts them to sleep when not in use. Never the less I would not want the device in a living room.

Cheap but definitely not nasty
I'd been looking for some time at possible replacements for my ageing two-bay QNAP NAS, used mainly for media storage and streaming. A recent ransomware attack meant that I had to re-format the drives so I decided this was the time. Despite not having the best specs out there, this has turned out to be a good choice. Really easy to install the discs and get up and running. The GUI fairly skips along and I now have access to the most recent firmware and apps, including vastly improved sync/backup options. I still have an old single-bay NAS for weekly backups so I've not bothered with RAID 1 this time.

Good device, poor software
Itβs working well, but the software needs an overhaul. Far too much unnecessary cruft and complexity.

Disappointing and frustrating
On paper this looked amazing, quad core 4k transcoding, runs containers (ish), qumagie, Plex, pi-hole and so on However, if you plan on running any of them in the background, more than one process at a time or two people access the device then get ready for problems and the biggest issue is that it will just disconnect itself from the network, have a paddy fit and several minutes later once it's sorted itself out, come back online. To be clear the quad core processor never skipped a beat totally solid, the issue is the memory, 2gb is just not enough and for some reason this is one of the few qnap NAS's that is not upgradable. Honestly if you could put 8gb in this it would be next level amazing, unfortunately I'm returning it today.

Amazing value of being used for as a file server
The amount of features this NAS has for the money is brilliant as well as a good spec in terms of hardware! Excellent for our server which also hosts a VPN so remote access to the file server is secure!
