Ally Sheedy stars as Lucy Berliner, a once-famous photographer, whose career is revitalized when she meets Syd (Radha Mitchell), a beautiful young assistant editor for a prestigious photography magazine. Withdrawn from the art world, Lucy is reawakened by Syd who offers her the hope of escaping her drug-filled world. Before Syd realizes it, she is drawn into Lucy's seductive and dangerous mix while forced to make choices she never imagined.

Wonderful, wonderful film
A marvelous film. Beautiful in the real connection between people. To me it doesn't matter that it's lesbian love. I can't remember the last time I saw a film that put over falling in love and being in love anywhere near as well. It's not only about love but puts over equally well the underbelly of their artistic scene. Written and directed by Lisa Cholodenko. She is obviously an incredibly sensitive director to bring out great performances from every one of her actors. Radha Mitchell was simply superb but then again everyone here was brilliant. "Greta" doesn't speak clearly but after the film, her performance is understood and her enunciation is something great in itself. This film heralds the coming of some major talents and reminders of the major talents of those already well into their careers. One of the great films of the last 10 years: don't miss it!

A film which sucks you in and spits you out
What an interesting film. Really didn't know what to expect and certainly didn't expect to get so dragged into the lives of the cast. Really great acting by Ally Sheedy who sadly doesn't do anywhere near enough acting. Such an ultimately sad film that it left me feeling a bit broken even hours after. Well worth a watch, but don't expect any laughs.

over rated
After a promising start I just became bored , a Nan Goldin style photographer fancies her neighbour and takes too many drugs . I feel i have seen this story so many times before and so as nothing new happened and there wasnt a twist at the end I dont really think that it is worth the money .

Boo! Hiss!
The plot - if you can call it that - stretches the imagination. Still, everyone is entitled to a little creative licence. The acting, on reflection, isn't too bad, but the production has all the hallmarks of a "Crossroads" Motel or "Prisoner Cell Block H". (If you don't understand what this means, Google it!) I like my films to have a little reality about them - especially the socially-erected barriers faced by LGBT people and the stigma and discrimination this may lead to - but this film circumnavigated such things!

Greta stole the show for me!
I watched the trailer for this before the film. A little odd that the trailer auto ran along with a few other films before reaching the top menu. I wasn't too convinced I made a good choice from the trailer alone. However as soon as the film started I was quickly drawn into the story. I found the story to be engrossing from start to finish but for me the star performance was not from the two central characters of Lucy played by Ally Sheedy or Syd played by Radha Mitchel. No for me it was the role of Greta played by Patricia Clarkson. The forty something, German actress, coke and heroine addict was a superb character role by the American indie actress Patricia Clarkson. Her drug and alcohol infused German accent was just wonderful. Like a character from a Christopher Isherwood book she deserved an Oscar in my book. Hugely enjoyed it.

Disfunction Masterclass
An interesting film demonstrating varying degrees of alienation amongst a disparate group of people. How this group came together and stayed together is a mystery . Ally Sheedy as the central figure is always a joy to watch in any film which she has been cast. Radha Mitchell sees an opportunity to advance her career in photography and is prepared to allow herself to be assimilated by the group eventually accepting the lifestyle of lesbian sex, drug addiction and aimlessness. Knowing that she (Ally) is on a path of self destruction, sees through her and attempts to disassociate Radha from her set. In the end Ally is not prepared to desert her long time lover for a younger girl. A thought provoking "small" film far more watchable than some distributed from the main Studios. Heartily recommended

not what you think
very dissapointed. I expected some sexy story at least it was a totally screwed up lesbian film. Negligable sex or chemistry and just full of drugs thats why its an 18, sad, disturbing and hardly a film to cuddle upto your lover with, think before you spluge your cash theres much better out there
